CSN - LightWing Messages - 9/25/2022
In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain. For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.
When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne.
He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them. The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion. On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot.
For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face. Psalm 11 (NIV)
“But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” Matthew 7:26 (Berean Standard Bible)
Last Sunday I offered the primary message because September 17 was Constitution Day, and I felt it necessary to have a message honoring the Constitution of the United States. It is truly sad that many Americans pay little attention to it in such turbulent times. However, it becomes much more tragic when our trusted elected or appointed officials actually ignore the Law of the Land, or work against it, either in an overt or a covert manner.
Our scripture verses for our LightWing Messages that today deals with the shaking of those foundations believed in, or relied upon. Jesus spoke about this concept on numerous occasions in various ways. The one relating to building one’s home upon sand is appropriate. Most of us know what happens to castles built in the sand. Yet, if Americans are oblivious to the Law of the Land, or are even hostile to our Constitution, it is appropriate to my follow-up message from the one I offered last week. As I mentioned last week: “I firmly believe that the U.S.A. was the second place for the foundation for the Kingdom that Jesus spoke of repeatedly…” Yet, the persisting question remains as to whether the foundation has once again been lost in the wake of the attacks of 9/11.
If this fading generation of American “baby boomers” has failed to pass on the reverence for the founding ideals and principles to the subsequent generations the answer comes from the words of Benjamin Franklin I shared in the article on the Constitution. CSN – LightWing Messages – 9/18/2022 Dr. Franklin looked into the future from his very pragmatic perspective, and said what he needed to be said at the time. But, his prediction was correct, and we are in such a time of destructive corruption. In that article. I introduced Abraham Lincoln’s view that Americans could not look at the Constitution without looking first through the ‘prism’ of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence.
In 1776, the Declaration was not viewed as important as the actual vote on July 2, 1776, to actually declare independence from Great Britain. To simply have such a strong, rebellious and public stance was genuinely dangerous in such a time. The written declaration made the public stance on freedom an official document as it would be sent to world leaders of the day. In that time, the written document was secondary to the actual affirmation. However, as the principles grew dim in the minds of the people, a young attorney from Illinois by the name of Abraham Lincoln believed it needed to be revived; citizens needed to be reminded of the value of the Declaration of Independence. We live in such a similar set of circumstances in such a time as this. This is the core of what the message for today is about.
Honestly, it is not that complicated. If Americans refuse to stand up for their God-given rights, they will lose them. And, I believe that if Americans fritter those rights away, we will also lose hold of the second foundation for the Kingdom. I know that seems harsh, but it is not my simple theory; it is historical fact from the pages of the Bible. Deniers need to awaken and get real.

May we, who are called by His name, humble ourselves, and pray as if our nation’s existence depends on it (because it does), and to seek His face and sincerely repent, and honestly turn from our corruption and wickedness. If we do not, how could we sincerely expect Heavenly Father to heal a land filled with wicked tenants? The very foundations of our land are being shaken right before our eyes. God may likely not heal the land, if we do not demonstrate our love for this land, but not just the fruits of freedom, but to show we are willing to take responsibility for the eternal vigilance that genuine freedom always requires.
Re-conceiving the Foundations of Freedom

In 2017, I wrote an article entitled “Abraham Lincoln’s Declaration of Independence for the Rest of the People” that was posted in the Communities Digital News, which was an offshoot from the Washington Times. The article examined how Abraham Lincoln used the basis of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence for his “Emancipation Proclamation.” My recent article on the U.S. Constitution in Canada Free Press and reposted in this LightWing publication, referenced how Abraham Lincoln viewed that founding document in light of the Declaration of Independence: “He explained that Americans cannot look at the Constitution without looking first at the Declaration of Independence. Lincoln viewed the Declaration of Independence as the moral foundation for the Law of the Land.”
Today, as in Lincoln’s day, Americans are increasingly confused and seriously question bedrock values of the Judeo-Christian heritage embedded in the founding documents of the nation. And to Abraham Lincoln, the Declaration of Independence was an historic document. But, to a young Illinois attorney from the backwoods, Lincoln looked at it in awe: it was a lot more than just an interesting artifact indicating a proclamation of independence from the tyrannical mother country. To the young Lincoln, the document represented a proclamation of human rights. It truly is. The words represent truths that Jefferson originally penned as “sacred and undeniable,” but likely later edited by Ben Franklin to be “self-evident.’ Yet, the truths were from Divine inspiration.
The words of the Declaration were not only a powerful explanation to the nation being birthed, but also to the rest of the world an expression of how precious the value of freedom itself could be perceived. Without Thomas Jefferson’s deep philosophical framework of ideals embedded within the Declaration of Independence, there may never have been a nation founded that represented the value of the pursuit of freedom. However, Atheists, Leftists and Progressives today question the value of the Declaration, and are actively attempting to eradicate those “self-evident truths” that the Founders could clearly see.
Lincoln viewed the Declaration of Independence as the moral foundation for the Constitution, or the Law of the Land, and he revered it as a cornerstone of American ideals. As he ran for office, he would use the vision of the Declaration in many campaign speeches, and after he became POTUS, in his presidential speeches and official letters – possibly the most famous being how he imbedded it into his Gettysburg Address. Nevertheless, a more definitive evaluation of the depth of wisdom embedded in the Declaration of Independence, Lincoln expressed in a speech he delivered during his campaign for U.S. Senate in 1858:
“My countrymen, if you have been taught doctrines [that] conflict with the great landmarks of the Declaration of Independence; if you have listened to suggestions which would take away from its grandeur and mutilate the fair symmetry of its proportions; if you have been inclined to believe that all men are not created equal in those inalienable rights enumerated in our charter of liberty, let me entreat you to come back. Return to the fountain whose waters spring close by the blood of the revolution. Think nothing of me – take no thought for the political fate of any man whomsoever – but come back to the truths that are in the Declaration of Independence. You may do anything with me you choose, if you will but heed these sacred principles.
The Declaration…was formed by the representatives of American liberty from thirteen States. These communities, by their representatives in old Independence Hall, said to the whole world of men:
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
This was their majestic interpretation of the economy of the Universe. This was their lofty, wise, and noble understanding of the justice of the Creator to His creatures. Yes, gentlemen, to all His creatures, to the whole great family of man. In their enlightened belief, nothing stamped with the Divine image and likeness was sent into the world to be trodden on, and degraded, and imbruted by its fellows. They grasped not only the whole race of man then living, but they reached forward and seized upon the farthest posterity. They erected a beacon to guide their children, and their children’s children, and the countless myriads who should inhabit the earth in other ages.
Wise statesmen as they were, they knew the tendency of prosperity to breed tyrants, and so they established these great self-evident truths, that when in the distant future some man, some faction, some interest, should set up the doctrine that none but rich men, or none but white men, were entitled to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of Independence and take courage to renew the battle which their fathers began – so that truth, justice, mercy, and all the humane and Christian virtues might not be extinguished from the land; so that no man would hereafter dare to limit and circumscribe the great principles on which the temple of liberty was being built…”
“I charge you to drop every paltry and insignificant thought for any man’s success,” he said. “It is nothing. I am nothing. Judge Douglas [Lincoln’s rival] is nothing. But do not destroy that immortal emblem of Humanity – the Declaration of Independence.”
Lincoln used the words: “immortal emblem of humanity” to refer to the Declaration, and though it may escape some, his understanding of ‘humanity’ was tied to establishing freedom as a firm and substantial reality in a world of corruption, bondage and tyranny. If he felt so strongly about these principles of freedom, how could it be surprising to people today that he took the serious responsibility to emancipate the slaves, even if it were just in a written proclamation. Lincoln did
understand the value of divine proclamation in alignment with God’s Will.
Yet, as in Lincoln’s day, Americans are currently living in a state of chaos and confusion, and many honestly question the bedrock values of the Judeo-Christian heritage embedded in our nation’s founding documents. Abraham Lincoln grasped our nation was “conceived in Liberty.”
Jefferson’s words formed a premise for all people to declare their alliance with the belief that all men were created equal and that all were endowed by the Creator with the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and freedom in the Pursuit of Happiness. Today, those who grasp the significance of the truths that are “sacred and undeniable” are called to honor and defend those truths.
Although those ideals and principles had existed in the minds of men for some time, they were woven into the very fabric of the Declaration of Independence, and it then was substantiated as a reality – more than just some philosophical treatise. And, Americans are the ones who were most challenged over two centuries to live up to these ideals. Such ideals still challenge the entire world, especially in such a time as this.
And especially in such a time as this, in the midst of chaos, denial, and despair it is a time of hope more than any other time in history. Certainly, as the American War for Independence changed the world with respect to the expectations of self-government as opposed to tyranny,
the foundations of freedom, though they may be shaken, still exist. As I have written before, there was no expiration date on the self-evident truths. The question is whether Americans still hold onto them, still embrace them, would still fight and die for the retention of such ideals.
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense may have expressed this sentiment best:
We have it in our power to begin the world all over again. A situation similar to the present, hath not happened since the days of Noah until now. The birth-day of a new world is at hand, and a race of men perhaps as numerous as all Europe contains, are to receive their portion of freedom…"
Such noble words from Jefferson, Paine and Lincoln have the capacity to stir the minds and hearts of the American people, and give our nation the opportunity to renew the foundations of freedom for all of the world. Our Declaration was written not just for Americans, it was for all mankind. The words of the Declaration of Independence still summon all people of faith and good conscience to defend the noble ideals of freedom. Or they can be forgotten and ignored.
It seems to me that is what Jesus was getting at when stating: “But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”
