“And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: ‘Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?’
“But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
“Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied.
He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’
If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Matthew 22:31-46 (NIV)
FOUNDER’S MESSAGE:
If Americans rush past the Thanksgiving holiday too rapidly as if it is just another holiday like some social speed bump in the middle of life’s highway, it would be a serious loss for them. In researching for the message that I offered last week, “The Pain and the Peace Leading to the ‘First Thanksgiving,’” I learned some things I had not known before and I reinforced information
I had known before by imagining the emotions that the Pilgrims may have experienced in their lives in their time. Their relationship with and covenant with God was incredibly resilient when one looks upon their miserable situation not only from our point of view four centuries later, but also from God’s viewpoint.
When one does look beyond their self-centered spectacles of this time, through the cobwebs of time, it is a very dim view of the past that can be perceived. However, with an unaltered written account of past experiences, those who seek to know in their time what actually happened in the past. It is why history is written. Descendants become a bit more capable of understanding their ancestors, or our forefathers, or those who came before us. The last two main messages focused upon Thanksgiving were compiled from one presentation I made previously, but there is a lingering question that often arises after this information is digested: What went wrong?
What went wrong? This is a good question considering the realities of the Pequot War and then followed by King Philip's War (led by Massasoit’s son). Certainly, these two deadly conflicts are also part of the historical record – they are not to be glossed over. However, they require a more clear perspective to provide a realistic understanding as opposed to mythology or an ideological narrative. The answer is that much went wrong. In reality, much had gone wrong from the start, and that start was the original start of human interaction – from the Garden of Eden onward.
While we hope our readers had a great Thanksgiving, after two years of weirdness due to the infusion of COVID into the world, we hope that this holiday time much reflection could have been focused beyond the food and the football to humble gratitude for the blessings received during the year. And hopefully, some of the true patriots of this day could have focused a bit on the original foundation for celebrating this traditional holiday: the peace between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims.

May we come humbly before God. May we repent for our transgressions against Heaven and against each other. May we honestly turn from our wickedness - whether it be apathy or indifference to injustice, or even lack of proactivity as good stewards of our Republic.
May we renew our covenant with Heavenly Father as His children. May we return to His original blueprint for a Land of the Free. May we rebuild our Republic.
Reflecting Upon the Peace Treaty of 1621
By Dennis Jamison
11/26/22
As has been documented in history, initially by the Pilgrims, and eventually by later historians,
the harvest celebration now referred to as the “First Thanksgiving,” lasted three full days with
feasting and friendship and friendly games and sporting competition. The foundation of this celebration rested upon an incertain friendship that originated in a peace treaty established between the great sachem, Massasoit, and John Carver, the first governor of the Plymouth Colony. This peace treaty is believed to have been affirmed sometime between the 22nd of March and the 1st of April in 1621.
The dates prove tricky for different dates appear in different documents but even more due to the shift from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The version from Mourt’s Relation records the peace treaty being agreed upon on Thursday, March 22nd. Another more recent version that was based on Bradford’s history, used April 1st as the date of the treaty. However,
a peace treaty was established between the Pilgrims (not the Puritans) and the Wampanoag. It is no longer taught in contemporary society, as much is no longer accurately taught about the real history of the Americas.
Yet, if students of history are determined and diligent, the truth can make them free as opposed to myths enticing them with illusions, or as opposed to secular-revisionist narratives stimulating ancient resentments. In the unvarnished or tainted history of this period, the real irony of history is that the sole Pokanoket survivor of the plague-decimated village of Patuxet, Squanto, became the central individual needed to serve as the translator for the peace treaty. The “Great Dying” epidemic had wiped out tens of thousands of American Indians from Maine to Cape Cod from 1616 to 1619, and had reduced the numerous and dominant Wampanoag to a mere remnant of the population they had been long before.
To secular historians, this is the secret of why Massasoit needed to establish a peace with the pitiful English colony. If this were the sole reason, it makes only partial sense. There was more to the story. If the Indians only wanted their weapons, they could have stolen them, or they were in a position of superior number even if one considers that 90 Wampanoag came to the feasting of the First Thanksgiving, so they could have easily wiped out the struggling English foothold on their land. Unfortunately, there is a similar spirit of hospitality that existed in American Indians all across the nation. Even Chief Seattle all the way across the North American continent had a like sentiment toward the White settlers in the Northwest.
An additional unique circumstance existed in that there were not just one, but two Indians in that vicinity that could serve as interpreters for a peace treaty to even be considered. The best one to serve in such a capacity, Tisquantum, commonly known as Squanto, spoke adequate English as he had been captured and sold into slavery by an English sea captain. He lived in England for some time after some Spanish friars taught him about God and eventually purchased his freedom. It was because he had been enslaved for five years, his life had been spared and was the sole survivor of his village. Not much detail is known of Tisquantum, or Squanto, but he would become the translator between his sachem or Massasoit and the leader of the fledgling English colony. He would serve as an agent of service to the Pilgrims in this desperate period of time of survival, as a true Good Samaritan. In Bradford’s “Mourt’s Relation,” he referred to Squanto as a “special instrument sent of God.” Squanto was essential to the establishment of peace between the two peoples.
In considering the time of the arrival and near extinction of the Pilgrims, it is likely they had the best eyewitness understanding than mere speculators. Their hope was definitely deposited in the future because of their past persecution in England, which was so great in their quest for
the right to pursue their faith as they chose. As it was recorded in Bradford’s history:
The one side labored to have the right worship of God and discipline of Christ established in the Church, according to the simplicity of the gospel, without the
Mixture of men’s inventions, and to have and be ruled by the laws of God’s word,
Dispensed in those offices and by those officers of Pastors, Teachers, and Elders, etc., according to the Scripture.
The other party endeavored to have the episcopal dignity (after the popish manner)
with their large power and jurisdiction still retained.
And as in other places in the land… many became enlightened till they were occasioned to see further into things by the light of the word of God. How not only these base and beggarly ceremonies were unlawful, but also thay the lordly and tyrannous power of the prelates ought not to be submitted unto, which thus contrary to the freedom of the Gospel, would by their compulsive power make a profane mixture of persons and things in the worship of God.
It must be noted at this point in student’s perceptions that the drive for such freedom to pursue their faith did not put the Pilgrims less harm's way on their journey to the “Promised Land,” it actually created a different set of problems they had to deal with if they were to survive. But, it was precisely their free worship of God that propelled them to such great lengths. According to later historians, the essence of William Bradford’s quest, as well as that of other true Pilgrims, was to protect God’s Providence,” as he “recognize[d] the faithful search for God’s will as the major quest of the pilgrim’s life.”
In this light, the peace treaty they entered into was essentially establishing a mutual pact of respect, trust and care for one another. A perceptive Christian would be able to understand that this was in alignment with Christ’s revelation of the greatest commandments: “Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
That Spring in 1621, Squanto served as the translator for the peace agreement between John
Carver, the first duly elected governor of Plymouth Colony, and Massasoit. It was a very simple
pact. The treaty, as recorded by William Bradford, said:
That neither he, nor any of his should injure or do any hurt to any of their people.
That if any of his did hurt to any of theirs, he should send the offender, that they might punish him.
That if anything were taken away from any of theirs, he should cause it to be restored: and they should do the like to his.
If any did unjustly war against him they would aid him; if any did war against them, he should aid them.
He should send to his neighbors confederates to certify them of this, that they might not wrong them, but might be likewise comprised in the condition of peace.
That when their men came to them, that they should leave their bows and arrows behind them.
Lastly, that doing thus, King James would esteem him as a friend and ally.
This was a very earnest agreement of respect and trust between two distinct peoples; it brought an incredible unity between these two diverse peoples; people who were from different races, who spoke different languages, who were from vastly different cultures, and who followed vastly different religious traditions. Yet, it is not part of English colonial history, nor the history of the United States as taught today. Instead, middle school and high school curricula focus mainly on the breaking of this peace treaty by Philip, or Metacomet, the son and heir of Massasoit.
Sadly today, the focus of study is on King Philip’s War in 1675, which lasted only fourteen months. The 50+ years of the Pilgrim peace started dying with the death of Massasoit in 1661, and was then lost in the cobwebs of history. It is normally said that the sins of the fathers fall on the shoulders of their sons; in Metacomet’s story, the sins of the son obliterate the good deeds of the father. Unfortunately, King Philip's War involved all of the English in the area in opposition to a Wampanoag confederation of other tribes, and it essentially ended the Pilgrim peace treaty that had been genuinely honored by both parties up until this tragedy.
In perspective, the peace of 1621 lasted longer than the peace after World War I and longer than the peace established after World War II, which was destroyed by the Korean War. In our contemporary time, it would seem that ignoring the value of over 50 years of peace in our past is dangerously detrimental to our future. In their time, these two peoples - the American Indians and unusually humble Europeans created an example of honoring and practicing the things that made for peace. Those who truly pursue peace today must revive this shining example of the victory of determined, principled people in their triumph over the encroachments of evil in their daily lives. It is a fine historical precedent established within the Providence of God.
