The Beatitudes
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:1-16 (NIV)
FOUNDER’S MESSAGE:
During the time prior to and including Thanksgiving day, we offered a message about the pain and suffering that led to the first Thanksgiving celebration. It must be remembered that each of the two diverse societies of people experienced much pain and suffering before they actually connected. As I mentioned in a previous edition, I made a conscious effort to imagine the pain - filled emotions that the Pilgrims may have experienced during their lives as they sacrificed all of what they had known in their previous circumstances in civilized society to come to a new land to start all over in their quest to connect to God. As mentioned: “Their relationship with and covenant with God was incredibly resilient when one looks upon their miserable situation not only from our point of view four centuries later, but also from God’s viewpoint.”
As I made such a conscious effort to imagine the reality of the pain and suffering, I remembered some of the parts of the Sermon on the Mount – specifically the Beatitudes. They are equally as applicable today in such a time as this. It is evident that by putting God first within the miserable circumstances they encountered, the community was still able to survive and move forward. The “Good Samaritan” actions of the Wampanaog Indians contributed in a big way for their survival.
This is historic fact. Yet, despite the vision of the Pilgrims, or the expectations of the American Indians, a series of events shattered the idyllic harmony that had existed for 50+ years.
Long before the United States of America was born, an opportunity for an extended peace with the native inhabitants of the continent. And, despite the efforts of the first six presidents of the nation to treat the Indian nations as legitimate nations, the seventh president, Andrew Jackson, set the government of the United States as a deadly adversary to the Indian peoples all across the country. The orchestration of the tragedies that led to the “Trail of Tears” set up a pattern by which the government could be used to marginalize, segregate and dominate a race of people.
Following the 1830s, the official government manipulation and brutal treatment of the Indians in North America demonstrates the capabilities of how a government can control and dominate an entire continent of people. The history has been recorded and it stands for all to comprehend if they would bother. It represents and reveals some of the most inhumane acts of America’s past and should cause all American citizens to reconsider what happened to “We the People” along the way to where we have arrived today. The history of the relations between the native peoples and the European settlers should be examined honestly, without agenda-driven narratives, to be able to liberate the people from bondage to their collective sins.
So, while the examination of the Pilgrim-Wampanoag peace treaty revealed great hope for the relationship between the two peoples, the breakdowns are also part of the historical records. In that history, the transgressions from both sides have been recorded. However, this history is in danger of being distorted or lost. One glaring example is the Marxist-rooted narrative of the now infamous “1619 Project.” It always was a journalistic endeavor of the New York Times to re-write history – in other words: “All the lies deemed fit to print.”
Ironically, much of the truth these days has been buried or obliterated – such as the obscurity of the Peace Treaty of 1621. On the other side of the “equation,” there is an effort to fan the flames of division and resentment and foment segregation and separation of populations. Such efforts use history as a weapon per the Howard Zinn methodology. The end result is that U.S. history taught in public schools today doesn’t take into account specific instances of cooperation and efforts initiating unity between the native population and the European descendants. Many young people today do not know more completely the history of their people or this nation.
Today’s message is from a witness and participant of the events in that horrific period of tension and warfare that erupted between the government of the United States and the American Indian nations. The message is a speech offered by Chief Joseph, the chief of the Nez Perce people who were defeated and deposited on reservations in the late 1800s. His speech was delivered in Washington, DC to many leaders of the nation at the time. He gave the speech two years after he surrendered to the U.S. Army in 1877. His words are quite stirring, and reflect a profound spiritual perception that may have gone over the head of the ones who received it.
There is more to the history of the clash of cultures and destructiveness and warfare that is part of the existing records. Unfortunately, much of that historical record since the 1960s is an attempt to undermine understanding and unity between people. It is focused on dredging up old wounds and deep resentments between peoples and races and cultures rather than seeking and implementing solutions to the failings of the human heart. Yet, there is more to the history than is presented by the secular-revisionists. The American Indians themselves were the ones who forgave the government and moved on with their lives.
Sadly today, so many Americans – even American Indians do not know this history of Indian efforts to create unity between the races. Omitted from the history books is an effort to build a massive monument to honor the American Indians that involved 32 chiefs representing 15 Indian tribes. Also omitted is the reality of 900 chiefs, representing 189 tribes, who were invited to sign a Declaration of Allegiance to the United States. This effort laid a foundation for their people to become citizens of the United States. Although this effort was incredibly significant because the document was the only one signed by the leaders of every one of the existing American Indian tribes within the United States. It is relatively unknown.
Although the Declaration of Allegiance to the United States represented the beginning of a ten year movement to grant full citizenship rights to the American Indian, it is not taught in public schools – what is taught is Critical Race Theory. However, on September 28, 1915, the Congress of the American Indian Association had made a bold proclamation as a true representative body of the American Indian community and recommended that American Indians become officially recognized as U.S. citizens. The sentiments of the representatives to that Congress are amazingly parallel to the sentiments shared in Chief Joseph’s words.
His words are profound. It is truly tragic that the European descendants stole the Indians land, homes, and their lives. It would have been much better if they had stolen their words and thoughts regarding God, whom various tribes knew by other names, but the essence is the same. What is most amazing in our time is that the challenge of transcending cultural, language, racial and religious differences is much more within our grasp than it has ever been before. The people of this time have the tremendous, yet terrible, responsibility to do better than our ancestors. However, freedom from guilt and shame, as well as genuine unity will come primarily upon the truth that can be discerned from God’s vantage point and not from a contorted or limited human perspective.
========================
May we come humbly before our Heavenly Father. May we repent for our transgressions against Him and against one another. May we honestly turn away from our wickedness - even if it is just apathy or indifference to injustice, or even if it is a lack of proactivity in being good stewards of our Republic. May we renew our covenant with Heavenly Father as His children. Let us return to His plans for a Land of the Free and rebuild our Republic.
'An Indian View of Indian Affairs'
By Chief Joseph
January 14th, 1879
Excerpted from the speech Chief Joseph delivered at Lincoln Hall in Washington, D.C.
My friends, I have been asked to show you my heart. I am glad to have a chance to do so. I want the white people to understand my people. Some of you think an Indian is like a wild animal. This is a great mistake. I will tell you all about our people, and then you can judge whether an Indian is a man or not. I believe much trouble and blood would be saved if we opened our hearts more. I will tell you in my way how the Indian sees things. The white man has more words to tell you how they look to him, but it does not require many words to speak the truth. What I have to say will come from my heart, and I will speak with a straight tongue. Ah-cum-kin-i-ma-me-hut (the Great Spirit) is looking at me, and will hear me.
Our fathers gave us many laws, which they had learned from their fathers. These were good. They told us to treat all men as they treated us; that we should never be the first to break a bargain; that it was a disgrace to tell a lie; that we should speak only the truth; that it was a shame for one man to take from another his wife, or his property without paying for it. We were taught to believe that the Great Spirit sees and hears everything, and that he never forgets; that hereafter he will give every man a spirit-home according to his deserts: if he has been a good man, he will have a good home; if he has been a bad man, he will have a bad home. This I believe, and all my people believe the same.
At last I was granted permission to come to Washington and bring my friend Yellow Bull and our interpreter with me. I am glad I came. I have shaken hands with a good many friends, but there are some things I want to know which no one seems able to explain. I cannot understand how the Government sends a man out to fight us, as it did [with] General Miles, and then breaks his word. Such a government has something wrong about it. I cannot understand why so many chiefs are allowed to talk so many different ways, and promise so many different things.
I have seen the Great Father Chief [President Hayes]; the Next Great Chief [Secretary of the Interior]; the Commissioner Chief; the Law Chief; and many other law chiefs [Congressmen] and they all say they are my friends, and that I shall have justice. But while all their mouths talk right, I do not understand why nothing is done for my people. I have heard talk and talk but nothing is done.
Good words do not last long unless they amount to something. Words do not pay for my dead people. They do not pay for my country now overrun by white men. They do not protect my father's grave. They do not pay for my horses and cattle. Good words do not give me back my children. Good words will not make good the promise of your war chief, General Miles. Good words will not give my people a home where they can live in peace and take care of themselves. I am tired of talk that comes to nothing.
It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and all the broken promises. There has been too much talking by men who had no right to talk. Too many misinterpretations have been made; too many misunderstandings have come up between the white men and the Indians. If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian he can live in peace. There need be no trouble. Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.
You might as well expect all rivers to run backward as that any man who was born a free man should be contented penned up and denied liberty to go where he pleases. If you tie a horse to a stake, do you expect he will grow fat? If you pen an Indian up on a small spot of earth and compel him to stay there, he will not be contented nor will he grow and prosper. I have asked some of the Great White Chiefs where they get their authority to say to the Indian that he shall stay in one place, while he sees white men going where they please. They cannot tell me.
I only ask of the Government to be treated as all other men are treated. If I cannot go to my own home, let me have a home in a country where my people will not die so fast. I would like to go to Bitter Root Valley. There my people would be happy; where they are now they are dying. Three have died since I left my camp to come to Washington.
When I think of our condition, my heart is heavy. I see men of my own race treated as outlaws and driven from country to country, or shot down like animals. I know that my race must change. We cannot hold our own with the white men as we are. We only ask an even chance to live as other men live. We ask to be recognized as men. We ask that the same law shall work alike on all men. If an Indian breaks the law, punish him by the law. If a white man breaks the law, punish him also.
Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to talk, think and act for myself -- and I will obey every law or submit to the penalty. Whenever the white man treats the Indian as they treat each other then we shall have no more wars.
We shall be all alike -- brothers of one father and mother, with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. For this time the Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people.
Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekht has spoken for his people.
Chief Joseph (March 3rd 1840 - September 21st 1904) Chief Joseph’s Nez Perce name, meant “Thunder coming up over the mountains from the water.”

I don't think European's 'stole' the land of the Native Indians, they came here seeking freedom from what adversities where in their country at that time. Even in Canada now Europeans are villainized, and 68 Christian Churches were burned down.
When Europeans came here it was unsettled land, it was wild, and yes there were Native Indians, even they must have come of somewhere. It is not set in stone that this was their land, this is God's land.
Every history has bitterness of dominance, but this has to be forgiven. And good came out of European settlers building, creating, schools/hospitals/laws. Christian people came here in good faith. Why are Europeans villainized, Europe is full of bitter history. But the Natives are still holding grudges, have they not heard of this prayer Lord's prayer, Forgive those that have trespassed against you? Surely this would solve some bitterness.
In Canada, the Lord's prayer has been removed from Government, from Schools, and we have a 'Land acknowledgement' that is recited, which means we honor the Natives. Which is wrong! and this is one step closer to threatening us with our property! Yes, there was bad history, but the Natives are endowed with not paying taxes, free education and free land! Lots of good came out of this! I have had enough of this victim mentality!
