How to Pray
Pay attention in your charity giving, that you do it not in front of people so that you may be seen by them, otherwise there is no reward for you with your Father in Heaven.
When therefore, you do your charity giving, you should not blast a trumpet before you like the pretenders in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified by the children of men; truly I say to you, they have received their reward. But you, whenever you do charity giving, let not your left know what your right is doing. So that your charity may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.
And when you pray, be not like the pretenders who like to stand in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets to pray, that they may be seen by the children of men, and truly I say to you, they have received their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your closet and lock your door, and pray to your father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you in public.
And whenever you are praying, you shall not be verbose like the heathen, for they think that they are heard by speaking much. Therefore you shall not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Therefore pray in this way: 'Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Your name,
Let Your Kingdom come, let Your will be done also in the earth, just as it is in Heaven.
Give us our necessary bread today.
And forgive us our debts, just as we also forgive our debtors.
And lead us not to temptation but deliver us from evil, for Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, for the eternity of eternities.' For if you forgive the children of men their faults, your Father who is in Heaven will also forgive you your faults. But if you will not forgive the children of men, neither has your Father forgiven you your faults.
Matthew 6:1 - 15 (Peshitta translation)
FOUNDER’S MESSAGE:
Two weeks ago, I offered a personal message in the LightWing Messages. Although it was not my idea, it was a request, more a directive from Heavenly Father to provide an overview of my experience in coming to recognize His existence. That experience was a most unusual one, but it set me on a journey of searching for answers and deeper connections to the source of a love that I had never experienced before.
The intent was to provide publicly my testimony of what really happened in my life to transform such an atheist to a more sane individual, who was not just satisfied with a belief in, or faith in God, but who also persisted in developing a personal relationship with Him. That past Sunday message was written out of obedience rooted in a love for Heavenly Father, but also out of real \concern for people who may be truly seeking their own answers to challenges in such a world at such a time as this. Simply, that Sunday message was for anyone who could find value in it.
Heavenly Father helped me to realize that it is a time in which people are having their faith challenged – even shaken – by the events of the times. Additionally, on the other side of the continuum of faith vs. skepticism, are those who have anemic faith and are struggling to make sense of all of the insanity flaring up around the world. Those who are perplexed, with little or no faith, also search for answers or meaning in their daily lives. Heaven has helped me understand that it is a form of selfishness to withhold my testimony because it may have value to some who seek real answers to pressing and stressful questions unique to our time.
Recently, I became aware of the Asbury Revival currently touching many people’s lives over in Kentucky and even spreading to other receptive communities. In listening to some of the stories, or commentaries, it reminds me of my experience of the Holy Spirit in my own youth. It occurs to me that it only makes my message today more relevant in light of so many people having similar experiences related to those I have lived in my quest to connect to Heavenly Father and to seek His Kingdom and His Righteousness. It is good to witness His Holy Spirit moving in such a way.
With respect to my personal testimony, I understand that some might find value in the sharing of my journey in order to develop initial faith, or stronger faith, or to hold onto their faith, in light of the present challenges and turbulence in our nation and world. So, I offer another article for today’s edition to share my pathway for anyone who seeks His face, or who seeks to know Him in a more genuine and much stronger way. Developing a wholesome life of faith and willfully striving for a sustainable lifestyle of continually living in the presence of Heavenly Father is not an easy journey. However, my humble attitude is simply: if I was able to do this, anyone can do this if they are ‘will-ing’ to do it. I had to break this message into two parts as it was too long for one installment. And since this Sunday’s message is a long one (over 1600 words), I’ll spare readers of an ‘overdose’ on my words.
As always, we hope our readers would consider all the messages in this edition relevant or meaningful, and if readers know others who might value the messages as well, please consider becoming one of our official LightWing messengers and please pass this newsletter (or even any parts that may be relevant) on to those whom you feel would welcome it. Or, please receive it into your own hearts and minds.
We have acknowledged that our LightWing Messages have moved onward into the Zoom realm. Our Zoom calls are free and for anyone. They are held each Wednesday evening. We leave it up to our readers; if you would like to discuss today’s message more fully and learn more readily about how I made the transition from a hard core atheist to a “spiritual sherpa,” please take the initiative and reach out. Many readers are already on the weekly invitation list. However, if there are readers who are interested, but who have not made the request to receive the Zoom link to the call, please send a brief email request to this address: d.jamzon@gmail.com
These words are being freely offered to you and are intended to shine light unto our paths, as it was written: “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Proverbs 29:18 - KJV
May God bless all of our readers and all of their loved ones. May God bless America!
May we, who are called by His name, approach our Father in Heaven humbly and repent for any inconsistency or our absence in communicating with Him for daily direction for ourselves and our families. May we seek His heart of forgiveness and His mercy upon us, our families, communities, and our nation. May we sincerely seek His Kingdom and His righteousness.
Strengthening Faith Amidst Turbulence (Part 1)
By Dennis Jamison
February 17, 2023
I have only shared a few times my testimony that I experienced the Holy Spirit electrifying me and setting me on a journey in the summer of 1973. After the experience, I intended to pursue understanding and prove to myself I was not crazy. But I had been transformed, and I also had the need to experience God in a more genuine and honest manner than I had ever experienced when meeting with Christians seeking to convert me. As I shared about this experience recently, I became acutely aware that I can no longer keep this personal testimony to myself, or hide it “under a basket.” (Matthew 5:14-16 - NIV) I am of the age now that I am much more inclined to practice obedience rather than resistance to Heavenly Father’s guidance.
Alhough I had begun a journey of discovery once the Holy Spirit had revealed God’s power and life-giving energy to me (I was only 23 years old at the time), I still had little life experience under my belt. I had been immersed in the wild and crazy campus life and corruptive college culture. It was hard to cleanse myself from such life experiences. However, I knew enough about the Bible that when Jesus came he urged people to repent, for he proclaimed the Kingdom of God being near. Despite the many and varied prophecies of the Kingdom not manifesting even after 2,000 years, I decided to begin by repenting. One form this took in me was of being humble rather as opposed to being arrogant and self-centered. I call it “mindful Ego deprivation (MED).”
Many people in this Western culture are often fixated upon getting their daily “meds” in whatever form may be required to keep depression, physical pain, or reality away. In order to connect to Heavenly Father more deeply, I began my MED routine, which included trying to think less of myself and more for others and trying to serve others as Jesus had admonished us to do. This is not an easy practice – it involves much more than an intellectual acknowledgement or basic intellectual exercise of accepting the wisdom of the concept.
One needs to realize that my experience of the Holy Spirit changed the dynamics of my life. I’d experienced something that I honestly needed to become clear about what had happened. I had to admit that I did not have all the answers, nor did I have “it all figured out.” I needed to open my mind, and not be full of myself. I definitely made up my mind to discover as much about the experience as possible. So, I needed guidance – even guidance from a religious person. Yet, it may have been the best advice at that point to learn to repent in humility and pray and to seek God’s guidance directly. I did.
After all, the Christian had asked me to humble myself, get down on my hands and knees, and talk to an invisible being whom I had never really believed in and certainly never met; but I did it. That was all it took for Heavenly Father to answer my questioning. Although it was an effort that was made as a result of a bargain, Heavenly Father willingly answered. I didn’t expect such an answer. At the time, it baffled me, as I did not feel I was an ideal candidate for being “saved.” To me, it was not logical; it made no sense to me why God would want to have anything to do with me because I had no desire to have anything t do with Him. Only later did I realize, it was about love – not logic. Then, much later, I realized it was logical too.
God’s side had won a new soul. But in reality, I had a lot of work to do because I did not know very much that I really needed to know for my new life. Much of what I needed to focus on in the new pathway I chose to take came from learning trust, and I needed Heaven’s light on the new path. I was determined to stay on the path and to be true to my bargain. The good book states that “...Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen..” Hebrews 11:1 (NASB) And, so I began my life of faith by suspending my skepticism and my cynicism, which come from Ego. I forced myself to sincerely seek Him – especially in prayer.
In such a time now, as our nation and the world are in constant turmoil and great tribulation, it is a challenge to merely be challenged to seek His face and His Kingdom and His righteousness. I find that many people are in “survival mode,” and more and more these days seek the easy way out through suicide. So, this time is incredibly challenging for all people – with or without faith. If readers are keeping their eyes and ears open, they do not need a list of all the things that aren’t right in the world as we know it today.
Yet, despite all of the wrongs and downright evil around the world that so many are witnessing, history reveals there has always been so many terrible things transpiring in the world. If readers are willing to receive it, people have had it much worse than those living now in this millennium. We need to maintain perspective, or we get lost in the weeds of our time. It is quite easy to see the presence of evil in this world. It requires no psychic ability to sense it. Yet, it does require a sense of focus upon what is most important and that is one’s relationship with Heavenly Father.
If one honestly admits what we see as a further development, or encroachment of evil, and if one honestly affirms that humanity has made it through the worst of human ignorance, misery and suffering, we can begin to see light shining through the dark clouds. Hope is there if one has eyes to see or ears to hear. Hope is there if one’s faith is anchored in a healthy and genuine relationship with God. However, one’s daily habits must include honest and sincere prayer to build that relationship. It is similar to building a relationship with another person. Jesus taught humanity that His Father was truly a person that one could relate with – even on a daily basis.
Yet, there are obvious problems with forming a relationship with an invisible person. Many I do not have to enumerate. However, the five physical senses do not function in such a relationship. We are physical beings; so, we cannot see God, nor touch Him. Nevertheless, human beings were made in the image of God. Each human being is equipped with spiritual senses and we are capable of communication with Heavenly Father. Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, and so many others: prophets and saints and people of faith had been able to communicate with God even before the coming of Jesus. We were created to be able to communicate with God in the spirit. As it says: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit…” John 4:24 (NASB) We resemble God in spirit, thus we are all capable of connecting to Him in spirit.
This all makes sense to those of faith. But, having no faith previously, I felt I was at a severe disadvantage. I had to struggle with developing an ongoing lifestyle in which I could consistently connect with this invisible being with whom I had only once made an incredible connection. I’d made the intellectual connection, but I had to re-learn how to communicate in prayer. I practiced this a lot in my early life of faith. However, once in a deeper expression of my need for guidance, I received from Heavenly Father that there already was a blueprint for growing or developing a deeper personal relationship with Him. And, that blueprint I discovered was already in a prayer I had offered on a daily basis for a good period of time. It was the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray – known as the Lord’s Prayer.
At such a moment, after a long period of time of attempting to pray in sincere propriety I began to realize that within the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus had provided a blueprint for strengthening one’s relationship with God. Regular and routine prayer can help to do the same thing (as in the case of young St. Patrick) because the more one sincerely converses with Heavenly Father, the more one comes to know Him in a more intimate manner. He reveals Himself based upon the genuine relationship that is developed. There is honestly no room for doubt or skepticism, as if we have such problems when we share with people. Do they exist, or do they not? The deeper a genuine relationship with God that is built, one realizes the foolishness of such doubt or skepticism.
Since this message is being presented in two parts, the second part that will follow will focus on the realization that Heavenly Father provided to me regarding the ‘blueprint’ or stepping stones for spiritual growth in the Lord’s Prayer. Actually, I have already written about this ‘blueprint’ a few years ago – during the time of COVID. However, I now know more than I did just a few years ago, and Heavenly Father’s push for me to share more in depth has become even more intense in this time. One may attempt to discover it for themselves by asking Heavenly Father directly about this blueprint – perhaps it would mean more. It would only offer greater proof or validity to what I have come to understand through prayer. Regardless, there will be a part 2.
