Prayer
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
your kingdom come,
Your Will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:5 - 15 (NIV)
FOUNDER’S MESSAGE:
As it has been mentioned in previous editions, I have been sharing a series of truly personal
messages, that I had preferred to keep to myself. However, Heavenly Father has worked yet another miracle – getting me to share these messages over the course of several weeks. It is not that I am unwilling to share these personal messages, I just do not like to attract attention to what I feel is an intimate relationship with God. Why would one want to share intimate secrets about the genuine love relationship with one’s spouse, or one’s children? This was previously my response when asked to share. I also did not sense the value of sharing such a relationship, as I compared it to the way people used to have guests over to their homes to offer slideshow presentations of their vacations to Albuquerque. I still believe that held relatively little value. Yet, Heavenly Father changed the way I view what He is asking of me.
So, this edition of the LightWing Messages will only have a single message (because it is long), as I am striving to be an obedient son. The message is the second part of the message I shared in last week’s edition: “Growing Faith Within the Ways of the World.” If I had carefully thought of how much content would be offered in these two parts, I may have divided the entire message into three parts. But, this is an afterthought – mere hindsight. Nevertheless, this part I believe, needs to be presented in a single message, as it reveals the entire set of stepping stones I came to understand through practice, and not mere contemplation of logic. What I truly believe is that at such a time as this, God wants His children to connect to His heart and mind and Will. It compels me to comply with His request to share what I deem precious to me.
As mentioned in a previous edition: “After I posted that message in February, I naively thought that my mission to share about my experiences was completed. However, it became quite clear later that I was not finished. He has my number, and called upon me to post another personal message…” In just that short of a time, I have grown to accept the request(s) and to comply. So, today I freely offer another installment of these personal messages. I realized that in all of this somewhere is God’s plan to cure me of being so self-centered. It is a cleansing I now accept.
As always, we hope our readers would consider all the messages in this edition as having some relevance or some meaning, and if readers know others who might value the messages as well, we pray they would consider becoming LightWing messengers and they could kindly pass this newsletter on to those whom you feel would welcome it. Or simply, please receive it yourselves.
Also, our LightWing Messages now have a history via our Zoom calls. Our Zoom discussions are held each Wednesday evening. We leave it up to our readers: if you would like to discuss today’s Lord’s Prayer message more fully and learn more about my quest to develop an honest relationship with God, please exercise your initiative and reach out. If readers are interested in receiving the Zoom link to the call, please send a brief email request to this address: d.jamzon@gmail.com
These words are being freely offered and are being sent to you as part of the “David Project.” Please receive this message as a gift from those who care. They are only words that are being freely offered, but some contain a deep message of faith, or a deeper expression of heart that readers can hopefully receive into their hearts. As it was written: “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Proverbs 29:18 - KJV
May God bless all of our readers and all of their loved ones. May God bless America!
May we humble ourselves, seek His face – but not just knowing of His existence – but of
honestly knowing His Heart and His Mind and His Will. May we also repent, and turn from our spiritual apathy or our actively wicked ways - even if that may mean to become more serious about what was most important to Jesus – that which he urged should become most vital to us… seeking first His Kingdom and His righteousness.
Growing Faith Within the Ways of the World (Part 2)
By Dennis Jamison March 10, 2023
Note: This message has been presented in two parts, and each part is focused on the realization that Heavenly Father provided regarding the ‘blueprint’ or stepping stones for spiritual growth woven into the Lord’s Prayer.
From Part 1 – This message is one that is based off of an article I managed to share in early 2020 regarding people’s relationship with our Heavenly Father. It is also based upon Jesus’ words known as the “Lord’s Prayer” in the book of Matthew.
The Lord’s Prayer is Jesus’ instruction to all of us on how to pray, but after much prayer over a considerable period, I received from Heaven that it also contains a set of stepping stones for personal spiritual growth – a ‘blueprint’ on how to develop a genuine, ongoing relationship with God through prayer. The message was initially written based upon the original Heavenly inspiration within the time of COVID. Heavenly Father gave me a push to share such a message then, but He is giving me an even bigger push to share this two part version at this time. I’m simply obeying what I have been asked to share.
As I mentioned in the first part, the point of this is not to just share these words “for them to become the basis of some intellectual talk on biblical history, or… some theological discussion,” but for those who seek, to truly practice using the stepping stones and following such a path – “not just knowing of His existence, not just seeking His face, but of honestly knowing His Heart and His Mind and His Will.” If any inspiration provides energy or guidance for others to develop or strengthen their own personal relationship with God, then so be it.
It is self-evident that a civil society is more harmonious when people are in their right minds, or
when each individual is in possession of a healthy conscience and concerned for the well-being of more than just oneself. It is common sense that when a greater number of people are more inclined to follow the dictates of conscience, the general well-being of the civil society is more naturally promoted.
At the core of such logic is individuals owning a healthy conscience and being more readily able to discern the difference between right and wrong and to have the conviction or courage to act upon such discernment – or wisdom. So, how does one strengthen a relationship with God in order to contribute to the promotion of a civil society that ensures the greatest good for the greater number of people? This question is intended to align with the quest for public virtue as well as personal spiritual growth.
In struggling with this question myself, and by praying earnestly about this, I received from Heavenly Father that there already was a blueprint for growing or developing a deeper personal relationship with Him. Only over a long period of time did I discover that this blueprint was within the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus had provided “stepping stones” for developing or strengthening one’s relationship with God. Sincere and consistent prayer can help strengthen one’s relationship (as in the case of young St. Patrick) because the more one converses with Heavenly Father, the more one comes to know Him in a more intimate manner. But, it is a two-way conversation.
The more natural and free the flow of one’s deeper concerns to Heavenly Father, the more natural and free the responses from the Father to His children. Heavenly Father never fails to teach us what we seek or strive to know -- if we, in turn, truly listen to what He teaches us.
Listening is a critical component of prayer. It is after all, communication -- a two-way process. As it is with effective and good or healthy communication between people, so it is with prayer as a two-way interaction with our Father in heaven. And, each time I enter into a genuine two-way process of communication with Heavenly Father, He also helps me to grow and
mature in my faith -- more than I ever thought possible.
So, as I prayed the Lord’s Prayer on a more regular basis, the words became written on my heart, I slowly began to realize that there are steps of specific levels in each of the verses of the prayer. Of course, I am not claiming any certified credentials an ordained minister may possess, but I know that I have sincerely understood these self-evident steps. And, it is possible that at some point, someone possessing credentials may have had similar insight and expressed it before. And that is fine -- it would only reinforce what I have come to realize in this time.
With the Lord’s Prayer, there is a humble acknowledgement of God in Heaven, and the honoring His name. Faith-filled Jewish people have revealed to me that when one prays, the one praying needs to truly know to whom they are praying. In other words, it is not a casual conversation about food choices or the weather. Genuine respect is important in coming before our Heavenly Father to communicate with Him. One can picture an image in which Moses came into contact with the burning bush, and was told to take off his sandals. Think – if one were going before an important public official, would not respect be shown? Jesus taught us to express this respect toward his Father in Heaven. Yet, Jesus also stressed that there is a more intimate relationship existing between God and His children.
Additionally, Jesus acknowledged God’s Will in the words: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.” So, not only there is an honoring of the Father, but a more serious acknowledgement of His Will – the Kingdom of God. Jesus also admonished those who followed him to “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 4:4 (NIV) Jewish people believed that the true Messiah would establish the Kingdom of God on the earth. Jesus came preaching the Kingdom, not a church, and humanity has yet to see the substantial KIngdom of God on Earth. It was not only meant to be a spiritual kingdom. The original Will in the Garden was the same Will Jesus proclaimed.
Beyond the formalities of honoring God and acknowledging His Will, there are stepping stones laid out in the Lord’s Prayer. These stepping stones are stages or levels of growth. Heaven’s children were meant to grow - not continue in childish ways. As a person grows in relationship to one’s parents and grandparents, in the same way, one has the capability to grow in relationship with God. As one becomes more aware of his or her identity in relationship with God, one is capable of maturing a relationship with our Father in Heaven. Growth and being a mature son or daughter of God was part of the original blessings God gave in the Garden: “Be fruitful!”
In the Lord’s Prayer, the first request is for God to give the faithful their daily bread. This request is loaded with symbolic meaning. Jesus knew that the Hebrews were provided with manna in the wilderness during the Exodus, and this could refer to physical sustenance only, but so many Christians understand that it refers to much more than material bread. When Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days, Satan came to tempt him like he had tempted Adam and Eve. Jesus reminded Satan that “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
I believe the key point is that human beings are in a dependent relationship with God for their children’s sustenance - whether material or spiritual sustenance. Spiritual sustenance comes from the Truth – the Word of God found in the Scriptures - in both testaments. Human beings are thus in a position to purely receive from their Heavenly Father like children receive from their parents – even in the secular world. When Jesus told Peter: “Feed my sheep,” he was not referring to barnyard animals being fed some fodder.
The Bible provides a foundation for understanding God, not only in history, through witnesses to His providence, but for understanding the different ways God has operated in and through His chosen champions throughout human history, as it was recorded. However, a different level of development is obvious, as Jesus explained that people needed to forgive others their debts, or trespasses, against prayer petitioners. Hebrew people in that time understood that forgiveness primarily came from God, and it was not an accepted practice that one could forgive another.
This level is one that requests greater understanding, greater involvement, a greater ability to put into practice Jesus’ request that we love one another. At this level, one is no longer simply in a receptive position to one’s Father in Heaven. At this level, a greater degree of maturity of faith is requested of God’s children - manifesting love and forgiveness is not just being receptive. The request is not limited to the intellectual embrace of the concept, but Jesus asked his followers to put faith into action via forgiveness.
Jesus definitely stated that “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35 Forgiveness just happens to be one of the greatest types of behavior that is requested of the Christian -- it is a genuine expression of love. Jesus offered forgiveness to those who sought it, yet he taught forgiveness as well. Peter’s question of how many times he needed to forgive anyone who had trespassed against him could be our question as well. But, the incident offered a moment for the Master to teach, and Jesus was emphatic when he expressed forgiving even as often as “seventy times seven” when one sinned against another. After offering the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus was emphatic: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15
Once this deeper level of heart is developed, the Christian is requested to pray that God not
lead the faithful into temptation. Often, I believe this part of the petition is glossed over, but
I am aware that theologians have had trouble with such a specific request from the prayer petitioner. And, from a family viewpoint, what parent would lead their own children into temptation? I truly had a hard time with asking God not to lead me into temptation. It was an odd request to me, and I think to many others. But, Jesus said it, so we must deal with it, right?
The third level of this blueprint was guidance to request that God help one to resist temptation and seek deliverance from evil, or the evil one. But what about this final stepping stone? I took extra time to consider this more deeply in prayer, and I questioned why anyone would have to beseech a parent to not lead one into temptation. I discerned that this step had more to do with doing God’s Will than to be led away from imminent temptation.
Remember, Jesus begins by having the faithful acknowledge that God’s Will is to be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. If one seriously considers this point, how will that happen? It seems to me that only those who are truly aligned with God’s Will, would bother to seek His Kingdom and His righteousness first. That says a great deal about why the Kingdom has not yet been built on Earth. Christians continually succumb to temptation. If salvation came through Christ – Why?
Eve and Adam, God’s own children, gave in to temptation. Is that not how we arrived at this sin-filled world? God gave Adam and Eve everything, but it did not stop them from ignoring God’s caution, falling to temptation, blaming and accusing one another, and allowing the growth and development of even more evil. Was it not Cain who initiated the cycle of murder through human history? I submit that the confusion or ignorance of this final stepping stone is one of the most serious obstacles to establishing a mature relationship with God and establishing dominion all over the Earth according to the original blueprint from the Garden.
Here is an answer I received when I asked Heavenly Father about it. Jesus said shared this point in the Sermon on the Mount: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48 I realized that the stepping stones Jesus inserted in the Lord’s Prayer help us to become more perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, as they indicate a process of spiritual growth with the ultimate goal of helping the faithful to allow the Father to come into them as they would bond with God.
I believe this is linked directly to what Jesus taught: “Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. John 14:10-12
So, if the faithful believe in Jesus, they will strive to allow the Father to live in them and do the works Jesus did through them, and that would include resisting the temptations of evil and building the Kingdom of God on Earth.
