Cain and Abel
And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain.
“With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel.
Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock.
And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand… Genesis 4:1 - 11 (BSV)
As many readers may be aware, we at the Citizens Sentinels Network have gone suffered many attacks against our communication efforts, and the most recent one has happened last week via the problems with the Coalition for a Principled Republic. Besides this recent attack, we will be evaluating our options going forward. We are now more conscious of evaluating communication efforts proceeding forward. Much is happening in this Cosmic Battle that the world is immersed in at this time.
Our LightWing edition today offers a follow-up to last week’s messages regarding evil in the form of child sacrifices and the battlefield as referenced by Dr. Owens. These deep-rooted human problems can be identified as originating in history long, long ago. Problems such as these have not been easily solved, otherwise the world would not be plagued by them in this day and age. For many people of faith, these problems originated in the Garden of Eden, as the original parents of humankind departed from God’s Word and His Will for humanity. Of the first children, Cain murdered his brother Abel, despite God’s attempt to counsel Cain regarding what could be a pathway toward evil and destruction. Such evil and destruction persists to this day.
The central message today is one I wrote in deep reflection and in prayer over the most serious afflictions of faith and of heart in America today. The title is: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” I have been addressing this in various ways for some time. But honestly, the most serious problems in America and throughout the world are sourced within the hearts and minds of people. We are often the authors of our own self-destruction and material devastation. I offer this message in the edition today as I truly believe that people of faith can become a greater influence over the culture of corruption and death than the ones who dominate us in such a time as this.
In other words, people of faith need to start, on a much larger scale, and in a much more powerful way to exercise their faith. In other words practicing what they preach, whether they are a parent, a teacher, a leader, or a preacher. We are all sons and daughters of God, and we all need to act like it, rather than wallowing in self-pity, misery, spiritual paralysis, or ignorance. God has helped to provide for us a Land of the Free, and it is akin to the Vineyard that Jesus spoke of in his parable. The Land of the Free is akin to the Garden that God first bestowed to His children. What are we to make of it? Especially Christians need to practice what Jesus had asked of all those who call themselves followers.
As always, we hope our readers would consider all the messages in this edition relevant or meaningful, and if readers know others who might value the messages as well, please consider becoming a LightWing messenger and please pass this newsletter on to those whom you feel would welcome it. Or simply, please receive it yourselves.
We also acknowledge that our LightWing Messages are now moving forward as discussed in our previous editions. Our Zoom calls are held each Wednesday evening. I offer once again my apologies for last week’s absence and lack of notification. My son came home to visit before he is to be redeployed overseas, and I dropped everything to spend quality time with him. I had the confidence that our readers would be forgiving of my lack of notice, but when I did have the time, I did send my apologies with an explanation to our regular viewers.
Honestly, we leave it up to our readers; if you would like to discuss today’s message more fully and learn more readily how to apply the message on being our brother’s keeper, or last week’s two messages, please take the initiative and reach out. If readers are interested in receiving the Zoom link to the call, please send a brief email request to this address: d.jamzon@gmail.com
These words are being freely offered to you and are intended to shine light unto our paths, as it was written: “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Proverbs 29:18 - KJV
May God bless all of our readers and all of their loved ones. May God bless America!
May we truly seek His face, but more - seek His Mind and His Heart, seek to know His Will, to repent for our wrong thinking leading to wrong actions, and turn from wickedness when we walk away, or walk without Him. May we truly return our love and joy to Him and express our love to one another as we are all brothers and sisters, all are children of our Heavenly Father.
Am I My Brother’s Keeper?
Hint: Jesus answered this question in a dramatic manner long ago.
By Dennis Jamison
April 30, 2023
The question: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” was posed to God by the elder son of Adam and Eve. (Genesis 4:9) It was a question Cain asked after he had killed his brother Abel, so it was not a genuine question. The question God posed to Cain that prompted such a response was “Where is your brother?” Cain answered that he did not know. That was a lie! Thus, Cain felt the need to lie, or attempt to deceive God. Additionally, Cain had already answered the question he threw back at God. He had taken action to resolve the matter between himself and his brother in the most expedient manner. He took it upon himself to murder his brother, and although there is not much detailed information of the account in the book of Genesis, inferences can be made from this rather tragic episode in the first recorded family affairs on the planet.
Studying history seriously one can look at the conflicts between peoples, races, religions, and political conflicts as having roots in this very poor beginning of humankind. It can more easily be understood if one looks at basic personal interactions and relationships across the span of human history. And, no nation in the entire world has a monopoly on human discord and conflict between individuals and groups. So, this “root” of evil in the history of humankind seems to have become planted so deeply that it is hard to eliminate this from human nature. It is pervasive and deeply entrenched in our human character.
This can be understood simply by reading accurate history and by observing human interactions today. Some prefer not to look at the bad and the ugly, but it does not go away simply through ignoring conflict, or pretending that it does not exist. Unfortunately, for those who do not turn away, and for those who will acknowledge the presence of such an inheritance, knowledge of the existence has not led to substantial and sustainable solutions to human conflict. It is much like a contagion that is passed on from one generation to another – like an historical pandemic that is much worse than a physical disease.
Today, in the United States, the nation has been ravaged by violence from one side of America to the other. The nation has been ravaged most recently by violence from our own children who have lost any sense of right and wrong. Young people with weapons of one sort or another have repeated in even more tragic ways the tragedy that we read about in Genesis 4. And, for those who await my commentary on the right to bear arms, do not hold your breath, as this will not be going in that direction. This is a commentary on what is in the hearts and minds of people in this day and age. It is a message that zeroes in on the question Cain asked God. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Astute readers are asked this question of Cain. Do we honestly believe we are responsible for our brother or our sister? Christians may answer this differently than people of other faiths. But, even when individual Christians are asked this question, the answers may vary. I submit that a person of faith needs to consider the historical record (one that is accurate would be much more helpful). Human history is a continuous history of conflict since the days of the Fall of Humanity.
The development of civilization is fraught with battles and warfare of the most vicious methods. As we study “civilized” Europe, one loses count of all the conflicts that have occurred even since the advent of Jesus. Even, one can read of the religious wars that existed, and that’s not limited to the conflicts between the Muslims and the Jews, or the Muslims and the Christians; one must take into account the wars between Christians. This is our history as people of faith. It is hard to imagine what would have happened if there were no faith to restrain human cruelty or wretched destruction of one another. From my limited understanding, within the animal kingdom, no mass effort to annihilate another herd or species has been recorded. How does that reflect on being a member of the human race?
Yet, despite the history – since the advent of the Messiah on this Earth – humanity is once again on the brink of total annihilation. We face the threat of nuclear war, or potential of devastation by way of biological weapons, or godless humans will use their creations with artificial intelligence to deal with the rest of humanity as Cain dealt with Abel. If the rest of the life forms could weigh in, would they welcome this or would they regret the elimination of human beings upon the planet? If Almighty God is looking upon humanity in such a time as this and He could offer a word of wisdom, what would He have to say to us individually or collectively as representatives of the human race?
Well, God already addressed this issue in several ways. Did we miss something? In conversing with Cain, God’s warning: “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” God already addressed the issue clearly at the root of the matter. Unfortunately, it is not always linked to the wisdom that Jesus shared with the people of Israel. It is totally ironic that he taught clearly that each of us ought to be our brothers’ keepers, but it was the leaders of the people that arranged the killing of the one who gave them the answer. Unfortunately, those who call themselves Christians do not connect the dots. Are God’s words to Cain not reflected in Jesus’ message of the Good Samaritan? Are God’s words to Cain not reflected in Jesus’ words that we need to leave our gifts to God at the altar if we have some differences with our brother?
Are God’s words to Cain not reflected in Jesus’ message of identifying the two greatest Commandments? In fact, is not Jesus’ life and sacrifice a direct answer to Cain? This son of Adam had defied life itself and defied God. The son of God had understood the value of life and the value of love more than anyone. Yet, Jesus stated that “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” He didn’t just issue the words as mere reflection. The words were a challenge, and many Christians offered their lives or were forced to lose their lives for their belief in Jesus. Beyond those powerful words, Jesus did what he challenged others to do. His were not idle. He laid down his life in obedience to God’s Will and for the sake of all of God’s children.
If one clearly understands this, Jesus absolutely obeyed God’s Words, which Eve and Adam refused to obey. For his reason, Jesus is understood as the second Adam. But, he also did the exact opposite of what Cain had done. Instead of taking anyone’s life, Jesus offered his life in place of God’s other children. For non-Christians, even Christians of little faith, it makes little sense. Yet, his sacrifice was the foundation for the continuation of God’s Providence on Earth.
But, herein lies the problem: Jesus challenged those who called themselves his followers to do the same – to be willing to sacrifice oneself for the sake of others, even to give one’s life for the sake of others. Today, we live in a nation that was built upon the Christian foundation, and we call those people heroes who risk their lives or offer their lives for others. Such is the culture that sprang up in the United States of America.
It is indeed unfortunate, but the fruit of the previous generations after the “Greatest Generation” has grown bitter and bears no resemblance to those who would give their lives for the sake of those whom they had never met. In fact, our nation was founded upon those who in the words of the Declaration of Independence: “...for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” God worked through such brilliant and brave people to create the Land of the Free. Americans were to raise our sons and daughters to have such a spirit, to keep the spirit of living for the sake of others alive. One must ask: where is that spirit of self-sacrifice in America today? The answer to Cain’s disingenuous question to God, was answered in a most emphatic way by the words and by the life of Jesus. God answered before: “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” Americans need to master sin, and must return to the righteous answer to this age-old question.
