As he was now drawing near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
And when he drew near and saw the city he wept over it, saying, “Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies will cast up a bank about you and surround you, and hem you in on every side, and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:37-44 (RSV)
FOUNDER’S MESSAGE:
In the wake of the Memorial Day weekend and holiday most Americans may have used the break as a springboard for a summer vacation, while many more are getting back to work and back to business in order to keep up with paying the bills. Unfortunately, it is truly difficult to get back to business as America is now being plunged into what seems to be insurmountable debt, and worry over America paying its bills. The concerning news is swirling around the debt ceiling arguments. Much of our related news deals with this.
Yet, as serious as America’s internal problems worry the citizens, many more overarching issues lead to concerns over the world – even the survival of humanity in such a time as this. One of the deeply serious and seemingly never-ending or ongoing concerns is the quest for a peaceful, just and civil society. This takes on a specific form within the religious realms, but the secular world has also sought for genuine world peace. This is of critical concern in such a time as the world seems on the brink of self-destruction.
Amidst the backdrop of these highly turbulent times, the need exists for those with cooler heads and a more adult and broad-minded, pervasive perspective on how to navigate such tribulation, not only in the U.S., but also across the world. Thus, in remembrance of JFK’s birthday and his efforts of navigating the turbulence of his day, we offer one article in this edition, and the title conveys the essence of the message: “John F. Kennedy and His Intentions Toward Peace.” It is clear the Peace Corps did not live up to the incredible expectations; neither did a League of Nations, nor the United Nations, live up to the expectations to manifest world peace. One may wonder why, but the answer is not complicated. It was Jesus’ greatest request of all of us.

John F. Kennedy and His Intentions Toward Peace
By Dennis Jamison
May 31, 2023
In the wake of the Memorial Day weekend and holiday last Monday, one connection that appears to have been lost is that May 29th was also the birthday of John F. Kennedy. Of course, few Americans alive today would have a memory of his birth; yet many of the older generation witnessed the energy and zeal of President John Kennedy. Unfortunately, many more Americans will likely remember his assassination. This memory was recently revived as Robert Kennedy, Jr. launched his 2024 presidential campaign. The nephew of JFK shared his opinion that the CIA had something to do with his uncle’s assassination, which has stirred up the controversy over the horrific assassination.
That day Kennedy was shot, November 22, 1963, was a horrible day for those who witnessed it. For the young and old alike, that moment was branded into their memories. The big three major television networks of the day—ABC, CBS and NBC—repeatedly ran the video footage of the assassination over and over again. Those who saw this never forgot it. Yet, John F. Kennedy deserves to be remembered more for what he did in life, rather than the details of his untimely death. Americans still cherish fond memories of the man who became our youngest president. His life was snuffed out while way too young.
JFK was a Democrat, yet it is likely that he would be marginalized by the current ‘Progressive’ Democrat Party. This becomes clear if we read Kennedy’s words. His inaugural address shows how different Kennedy was from Democrats today. The leadership promotes an opposite belief to Kennedy’s often-quoted “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country….” Democrats have inverted Kennedy’s challenge to Americans by promising that the government will provide for all people’s needs. It is a proven way to ensure dependency upon Big Government and dependency on the Democrat Party.
Yet, despite the political machinations today, Kennedy’s words and actions stand out from the poisonous political divisiveness being generated in such a time as this. Kennedy’s effort to inspire Americans to take responsibility and to get involved in public service and actions to help the less fortunate have simply become a ploy of his Party to appear concerned about people’s welfare. In essence, the Democrat Party are big on pretense today. It has little to do with the Party of Kennedy. Yet it persists in keeping him as a symbol – possibly due to positive imagery surrounding his presidency, something sorely lacking in recent Democrat presidents.
Consider Kennedy’s choice of words in his inaugural address, setting a tone for his presidency:
We observe today not a victory of Party but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life.
And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe – the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.
We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, tha the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans, born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose anyfoe to assure the survival and the success of liberty…
Paying any price is what contemporary Democrat leaders focus upon – literally. But, Kennedy leaned more conservative in his handling of the people’s money. Actually, JFK was referring to ensuring the “survival and success of liberty” in paying any cost. Those who were alive during Kennedy’s presidency should remember such international turbulence then: the Cuban missile crisis, the Bay of Pigs, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, and various challenges of communism. He fanned the flame of freedom in the world – not only clear in his stance against communism, he attempted to back up his words with deeds. Additionally, in the midst of such global turmoil, he had the audacity to dream big dreams. One substantial endeavor was the concept of a Peace Corps. It was a noble dream before the world was truly ready for such a dream.
And although the world may seem much less peaceful now than in Kennedy’s era; much of humanity still holds onto hope for a better, more peaceful public society. For Kennedy, it took courage and great vision at the time of his presidency to carve out space amidst the turbulence to revive the hope of world peace through the fundamental concept of service to humanity. In truth, this concept was not originally from Kennedy. Ultimately, Jesus dramatized the concept of being a true servant to others long before JFK. But, during his 1960 presidential campaign, then Senator Kennedy learned of a proposal made in the late 1950s by Representative Henry Reuss of Wisconsin for the creation of a “Point Four Youth Corps.” That idea became the foundation for Kennedy’s Peace Corps.
To establish the Peace Corps, JFK wasted no time. Not long after his inauguration, he issued Executive Order #10924 formally establishing the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. This was the beginning of the new agency in the Department of State designed to train young Americans to commit to foreign missions in nations where such an investment in the development of a nation would benefit the population. Almost immediately, the concept of the Peace Corps touched the hearts and minds of young people across the nation and thousands volunteered for the new initiative. The Peace Corps celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2021. And up to that time, over 240,000 Americans had served in more than 140 nations. But what have Americans heard of substantial accomplishments that testify to the success of the Peace Corps over the years?
If one realistically examines the genuine impact of this noble endeavor, the unofficial record is not so strongly supportive of substantial achievements according to several detractors. Indeed, though intentions were highly idealistic, the actual achievements were less than spectacular. In addition, many misused the agency for their own benefit or the benefit of their Party. The most significant evidence of that is the state of the world today and America’s stature among nations of the world, or its pathetic “Global Peace Index” in comparison to other nations. A fair question could be asked as to how much good the Peace Corps truly manifested in the world.
The answer to such a question may reside in the manner in which the endeavor was manifested and the genuine intent and the extent of the mission of the Peace Corps. The initiative was set up under the U.S. government. Today, even citizens in the United States have a difficult time of trusting the motives and machinations of the federal government. As a U.S. government agency, many people around the world had great difficulty trusting the motives of representatives of the U.S. government when the Peace Corps commenced. It was a noble vision, indeed, but the real question of effectiveness should open up an honest assessment of the genuine gains made in 62 years of serving people of the world.
To put this in perspective, one should return to the source: Kennedy’s words at his inauguration:
Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us…
And if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor, not a new balance of power, but a new world of law, where the strong are just and the weak secure and the peace preserved.
In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service around the globe.
Now the trumpet summons us again; not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are; but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, ‘rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation’– a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.
Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility; I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it – and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on Earth God’s work must truly be our own.
These words of President Kennedy were high ideals. He believed they could bear fruit. But, we know it is difficult to live up to high ideals. Unfortunately, making the Peace Corps a part of the government bureaucracy must be questioned as to whether it was truly “God’s work on Earth,” or political maneuverings of a government agency.
The desperate need for a genuine Peace Corps originating from the realms of Heaven still exists, so ultimately, Kennedy had the right inclination. However, genuine service must originate from a true humility to be our brothers’ keeper (sisters too) – a willingness of the heart to offer what can in the shoes of servants. The Messiah taught this to his disciples. All seeking to serve should also continually seek God’s Heart towards all of His children. This resonates with the greatest of Commandments: loving God and loving our brothers and sisters. The substantial work of building God’s Kingdom cannot be rooted in arrogance or condescension. The very real need for a Peace Corps version 2.0; but more a God’s Peace Corps guided by Heaven rather than politics or government bureaucrats. That could be a substantial pathway to God’s Kingdom.
We’re Celebrating Natural Family Month!
We have recently supported information about James Harrison’s efforts to promote and maintain a month-long awareness or “Celebration of the Family” as a national holiday. Again, we remind readers in this edition by offering a link to the Natural Family Foundation website. This effort had started on Mother’s Day and will continue through to Father’s Day this month.
Pursuing A Natural Family Celebration is a positive approach to repairing our nation in such a divided time. Mr. Harrison, National Director of Natural Family Strong Natural Family Foundation has initiated a new holiday in the Ohio region as a way to celebrate the Family! In concert with other local community leaders, Natural Family Strong proposed earlier in the year to make the time period between Mother's Day in May through Father's Day in June an annual celebration of the Natural Family. At the Citizen Sentinels Network, we believe in the effort and wholeheartedly support it. We’re attempting to keep readers up to date on efforts aligned with such a month - long celebration at the local or regional levels.
