The Ten Commandments
And God spoke all these words, saying:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.
Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” Exodus 20:1-17 (NKJV)
Last Thursday’s edition of the Coalition for a Principled Republic newsletter offered two features focused upon God-given rights. One of the messages offered was the Declaration of Arms that the Second Continental Congress passed in July of 1775 after the famous skirmishes on the green at Lexington, and on the Concord bridge, and the battle of Bunker Hill. The effort of the British to seize the colonist’s weapons and ammunition was essentially the spark that ignited the War for Independence. The pivotal underlying focus was the right of the people to possess arms and ammunition to defend themselves – even from their own government. This may seem unique in human history, it is not unprecedented; it is actually ancient.
Biblical history, in the Book of Esther, reveals that the right of self-defense was honored by the Persian king who decreed that the Hebrew people had the right to protect themselves. This was a reversal of what he previously ordained after the drama initiated in his court in which he was tricked into issuing a royal mandate that all of the Hebrews in his extensive empire be executed. It would be good to read Esther to see how a terrible error was corrected to avoid a holocaust of epic proportions. But, in the 1930s, the Jewish people in Germany were forced to surrender any weapons they owned to the Nazi government, which enabled that government to exterminate six million Jews. Very few people believed that such evil could be manifested in their time. The war put an end to such evil originating from the Nazis, but it did not end such evils.
Today in the United States, secular progressives would prefer only criminals be armed and the regular, law-abiding citizens not have any right of self-defense protected by the government via the U.S. Constitution. However, our Founders were much wiser than the present crop of clever politicians and wanna-be tyrants who are constantly seeking numerous methods to disarm a naive or sleeping public. The right to bear arms, thus the right to protect oneself (from even hostile government agents) was written into the Bill of Rights by brave and brilliant Founders who knew the evils of tyranny in human history.
The right of self-defense originates in God’s Ten Commandments to HIs children. Most secular people have a hard time comprehending it is a God-given right because they primarily believe only in the rights mandated by governments. The U.S. Bill of Rights enumerates our God-given rights in the Declaration of Independence, and secures those rights in the Law of the Land. The very first of those God-given rights was the right to worship and to not permit the government to interfere with or restrict such rights of faith-filled individuals. These rights came as the fruit of the Judeo-Christian heritage that was rooted in the soil of what would become the United States. It is apparent that the basis of those rights originated in the Ten Commandments. This is the focus of our first message today.
In April of 2019, Pastor Earl Wallace and I collaborated on an article that we put in the Citizen Sentinels Network newsletter. We offer that message here today because I want readers to become acquainted again with Pastor Wallace’s core message. This message today represents the continuing call to bring America back to the strong foundation stones of the Judeo-Christian heritage upon which our nation was built.
Although we have presented verses of the Ten Commandments on a number of Sundays in this venue previously, Pastor Wallace’s message of the “Biblical Basis of the Bill of Rights” is a very powerful message of how the United States’ foundations rest upon the Ten Commandments. He has been preaching this incredibly relevant message for our time regarding these words given by God to mankind thousands year ago. It is not just a message for God’s people in the time of Moses, but it is a message for the American people in such a time as this. As I mentioned in different ways before, the sacred truths had no expiration date. Those self-evident truths still exist. It is “We the People” who have lost touch with them. We still need to re-write them upon our hearts, and we need to pass them on to our children if our Republic is to be preserved.
The second message is from Dr. Robert Owens. He provides a perspective on how relevant our God-given rights were to President Trump. His article was written before the 2020 presidential election,’ and is entitled: “President Trump Stands Up For Religious Liberty.” He provides a more cohesive perspective on what Americans are missing from the opposition Administration today. Dr. Owens perceives our freedoms as gifts that our Father has given us. What we do with the gift is still in our hands to receive or reject. Our Father doesn’t force us, and that is why the gift of Freedom is so very precious.

The Biblical Basis of the Bill of Rights

The government of the United States is a constitutional republic, meaning we are organized under a constitution of laws that everyone is supposed to obey, from the President of the United States to the youngest person. Yet, many citizens do not clearly understand all the provisions of the U.S. Constitution. And today, many citizens do not easily realize that there is a discernible connection between the principles in America’s Bill of Rights and the Bible’s Ten Commandments. The Bill of Rights, also known as the first Ten Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, provided the framework within which our beloved homeland was governed and regulated.
These ten provisions of the Bill of Rights were written by America’s founding fathers to guide the government of the newly created United States. These ten provisions are rooted in the Judeo-Christian based Ten Commandments. These Commandments, and other Biblical principles, are the foundations of the Judeo-Christian ethic, which is the value system America’s Founding Fathers utilized when constructing America’s founding documents. This connection can be described as “The Biblical Basis of The Bill of Rights,” which applies personal responsibility before God to corporate and civic life, so that no matter what occupation, position or pursuit one enters, the same behaviors are expected, and should be anticipated.
“The Biblical Basis of The Bill of Rights” expresses how the Ten Commandments parallel the Bill of Rights. In fact, the Bill of Rights could have been named “The Ten Commandments for Government.” Those who have the basic knowledge of The Ten Commandments understand that they are written in a series of do and don’ts or “Thou shalt nots.” When people obey them, such as Commandment number six, which says ‘Thou shall not murder,” everyone else enjoys the right to not be murdered. In the same manner, when the U.S. federal government obeys its “Thou shalt nots” codified in the Bill of Rights, then “We the People” enjoy our rights to pursue life, liberty and happiness – as long as we do not violate the Ten Commandments against other citizens while engaging in our own pursuits.
When government obeys the Bill of Rights it safeguards our people’s rights, so “We the People” enjoy freedom. When government violates the Bill of Rights that safeguards the people’s rights, it violates the freedom from “We the People.” Operating in God’s wisdom of the Founding Fathers, they constructed rules for to compel government to treat “We the People” according to the Ten Commandments. In fact, the U.S. Bill of Rights are so Biblically-based that government cannot violate one of them without also violating at least one of the Ten Commandments, and vice versa. Since the Ten Commandments express the way God wants a civil society to function, when government violates one of the Bill of Rights and — simultaneously violates breaking one of the Ten Commandments, it is violating the way God wants us to live.
Specifically, in the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the signers of that cornerstone document dramatically proclaim that people have “inalienable rights” that are “endowed” to them by a “Creator.” Moreover, that the governments are established by people for the purpose of securing the “endowed” rights, they can be abolished by the people for attempting to violate those rights.
The cornerstone of these concepts is The Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson and approved by the rest of the Constitution’s signers, dramatically proclaims that we have “inalienable rights” that are “endowed” to us by our “Creator.” Moreover, that governments are established by people for the purpose of securing these “endowed” rights. We the People” are encouraged to abolish any government that attempts to violate those rights.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government… (The Declaration of Independence)
These inalienable rights also are called “Natural Rights” and are derived from the “Laws of Nature” and “Nature’s God,” as reflected in The Ten Commandments. This means that the inalienable rights were also expressed in The Ten Commandments. This more specifically means:
As God explains how we are to worship Him in Commandments one through four, America’s Founding Fathers realized God is saying in Commandments one through four, that “Everyone has a right to worship Him publicly in those ways.” This is why America’s historical buildings have Bible references carved into them in stone – by architectural design, not as the result of college pranksters sneaking around at night to place them here.
In Commandment Five, God explains that He wants honor to be the guiding principle of our families, so the Founding Fathers limited government’s ability to interfere with a family’s faith in God, and their personal desires for how they raise their children, and how they inherit their family’s property. The Bible also places responsibility for educating children squarely on the shoulders of their parents.
God told us in Commandment Six, “Thou shalt not murder,” which is another way of saying all citizens have the right not to be murdered. So America’s Founding Fathers gave us the Second Amendment right to bear arms, so we can defend ourselves against criminals taking our lives.
God says in Commandment Seven that people should not commit adultery, nor fornication, which is having sex outside of marriage. In light of this, the Founding Fathers realized that everyone has a right to conduct their lives according to God’s commands about sexual relations, and the laws they made reflected this. America’s legal system traditionally has provided strict penalties as a deterrent to rape and kidnapping, which violates God’s desire for people to be secure in their own persons. This is the opposite of how today in government-provided public schools, children are mandated to learn an evil and destructive plan for their sexuality instead of God’s plan for their natural humanity.
Where God says, in Commandment Eight, we should not steal, America’s Founding Fathers understood that God is saying that everyone has a right not to be stolen from. When government steps over the line and steals from people either through excessive taxation, fees and regulations, it is ripping off a) itself, b) “We the people,” and c) those deprived of their property – out of God’s plan for the material blessings of all involved! In God’s sight, this is sin regardless of how people who work in government try to cloak the activities under the guise of the “greater good,” or through “eminent domain,” or some other positive sounding propaganda dissembling.
Where God says in Commandment Nine we should not “bear false witness against one’s neighbor,” it denounces people who lie. America’s Founding Fathers understood that God is saying that everyone has a right not to be led astray by being lied to, or lied about.
Where God says in Commandment Ten we should not covet, America’s Founding Fathers understood that God is saying everyone has a right not to be conspired against by others (including especially those acting as stewards of our government institutions, who should not covet our four P’s, meaning: a) our persons, b) our people, c) our positions, and/or d) our possessions.
We understand that people who violate the Commandments God gives His children, will include those who work in government. So, citizens need to keep in mind America’s Founding Fathers understood that only people who possess a Judeo-Christian value system that honors the Ten Commandments, would administer freedom as they and God intended. The government cannot make enough laws that will force dishonest and evil people obey them. Only conscientious people, who have a Ten Commandments oriented value system, are those who are qualified to administer, represent, and oversee the American way of life the Founding Fathers established and codified in the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. This would safeguard and empower “We the People.”
President Trump Stands Up For Religious Liberty

President Trump addressed a United Nations Event on Religious Freedom. In his speech he boldly spoke up for religious freedom and against religious persecution saying, “The United States is founded on the principle that our rights do not come from government; they come from God. This immortal truth is proclaimed in our Declaration of Independence and enshrined in the First Amendment to our Constitution’s Bill of Rights. Our Founders understood that no right is more fundamental to a peaceful, prosperous, and virtuous society than the right to follow one’s religious convictions.
The religious freedom enjoyed by American citizens is rare in the world. Approximately 80% of the world’s population live in countries where religious liberty is restricted, or even banned. The United States calls upon the nations of the world to end religious persecution. To stop the crimes against people of faith, release prisoners of conscience, repeal laws restricting freedom of religion and belief, protect the vulnerable, and the oppressed, America stands with believers in every country who ask only for the freedom to live according to the faith that is within their own hearts.”
Taking aim at a tragic truth ignored by the Corporations Once Known as the Mainstream Media President Trump continued, “It is estimated that 11 Christians are killed every day for following the teachings of Christ. The USA is forming a coalition of businesses for the protection of religious freedom which will encourage the private sector to protect people of faith in the workplace. Too often, people in power preach diversity while censoring the faithful. True tolerance means respecting the right of all people to express their deeply held religious beliefs. The United States of America will forever remain at the side of all who seek religious freedom and I ask all nations to join us in this urgent moral duty to allow every person to follow their conscience, live by their faith, and give glory to God.”
Summing up his position and the policies of his administration the President boldly said, “We’re standing up for almost 250 million Christians around the world who are persecuted for their faith.”
And President Trump has put his actions behind his words. Back in 2017 While commemorating the National Day of Prayer, President Trump signed an executive order that he said will "Defend freedom of religion and speech in America." While addressing the gathering of American religious leaders the President also said, "The Founding Fathers believed religious liberty was so fundamental they enshrined it in the first amendment in the constitution, yet for too long the Federal government has used the power of the state as a weapon against people of faith bullying and even punishing Americans for following their religious beliefs. No American should be forced to choose between the dictates of the government and their faith." Freedom is not a gift from government. Freedom is a gift from God."
The order, based on one of Mr. Trump's campaign promises, provided regulatory relief from Obamacare requirements such as the requirement that organizations provide contraception care. A requirement that many religious organizations felt was forcing them to violate their beliefs.
Taking a swipe at the Johnson Amendment to the IRS Code, which prohibits political speech in churches, the President also directed the Department of Justice to develop new rules designed to establish religious protections for all Americans saying, "Under my administration, free speech does not end at the steps of a cathedral or synagogue, we are giving our churches their voices back, with this order, we will also make clear that the federal government will never penalize any person for their protected religious beliefs."
And this work to give legs to his promises continues into the present time, on Tuesday June 2, 2020, President Trump signed an executive order on international religious freedom. The order reads, “Religious freedom, America’s first freedom, is a moral and national security imperative. Religious freedom for all people worldwide is a foreign policy priority of the United States and the United States will respect and vigorously promote this freedom.” The executive order also allocates an annual amount of $50 million for advancing international religious freedom by deterring attacks on sects and enhancing security at houses of worship.
Tuesday’s order is aimed at bolstering global incentive programs and restricting the issuance of visas under the 2012 Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, which targets perpetrators of human rights abuse and corruption.
This is all part of a coordinated campaign to bring attention to the war against faith being waged
by the forces of evil around the world. Following Trump’s lead, the State Department has brought a new focus on religious freedom. The Executive Order states, “The Secretary shall require all Department of State civil service employees in the Foreign Affairs Series to undertake training modeled on the international religious freedom training described by the Foreign Service Act and amended in 2016.” Also, President Trump has hosted victims of religious persecution striving to bring this ongoing attack against faith the visibility it deserves.
Drawing a line in the sand President Trump does not equivocate when he stakes out his position with regard to religious freedom, “Each of us has the right to follow the dictates of our conscience and the demands of our religious conviction.”
On the world stage President Trump, while hosting the Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom event, called for:
The international community and business leaders to work to protect religious freedom.
All nations to act to bring an end to religious persecution and stop crimes against people of faith.
Taking the lead, the United States under the Trump Administration:
The State Department has hosted two Religious Freedom Ministerials, during which more than 100 governments and religious leaders committed to fight religious persecution.
The Administration is spearheading the International Religious Freedom Alliance, an alliance of nations dedicated to confronting religious persecution around the world.
The Administration has taken steps to protect victims of all faiths from religious violence.
The Administration will dedicate an additional $25 million to protect religious freedom and religious sites and relics.
The Department of Justice hosted its Summit on Combating Anti-Semitism in July.
The United States has provided humanitarian aid to help Christians and Yazidis who suffered at the hands of ISIS and to help Rohingya Muslim refugees fleeing persecution.
Not overlooking the domestic war against religion by the enemies of faith President Trump has made it a priority to support every American’s fundamental right to religious freedom enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
In 2017, President Trump signed an executive order to advance religious freedom, restoring the ideals that have undergirded our Nation since its founding.
The President took action to ensure Americans and organizations are not forced to violate their religious or moral beliefs by complying with Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) established a new Conscience and Religious Freedom division to help direct the agency’s efforts to protect religious freedom.
HHS took action to protect the right of healthcare entities to act according to their conscience.
This year, the Administration finalized a rule providing more flexibility for Federal employees whose religious beliefs require them to abstain from work on certain days.
The Administration has unequivocally stood for religious freedom in the courts.
This campaign for religious liberty is all part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to advance religious freedom by combating rising levels of violence around the globe. The wide scope of this war against faith being waged by the worldly forces of evil can be seen in facts such as these:
Eighty-three percent of the world’s population lives in nations where religious freedom is threatened or banned.
The Trump Administration is deeply concerned for the more than 1 million Uighurs interned in Chinese internment camps.
Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world.
Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Baha’is, humanists, and non-believers alike—almost every group has been increasingly persecuted over the past decade.
Many former administrations paid lip service to the freedom of religion which is necessary for humanity to find its way to God. President Trump has done more to stand up for religious liberty in one administration than every other president combined.
