Habakkuk’s Complaint
The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.
How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?
Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
The Lord’s Answer
“Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.
I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwellings not their own. They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law to themselves and promote their own honor.
Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;
they all come intent on violence. Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand. They mock kings and scoff at rulers. They laugh at all fortified cities;
by building earthen ramps they capture them. Then they sweep past like the wind and go on— guilty people, whose own strength is their god.” Habakkuk 1:1-17 (New International Version)
The Call of Jeremiah
Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”
The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”
“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied. The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?” “I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.” The Lord said to me, “From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.
“Their kings will come and set up their thrones in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls and against all the towns of Judah. I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made.”
Jeremiah 1:9-16 (New International Version)
I offered the main message last week, as I was willing to humbly share my humbling experience of personal travel through the “valley of the shadow of death.” Today’s LightWing Messages edition is another unusual edition, as it is only the second time in our history we are offering two messages from Dennis Jamison. It is not because it is important to cram this edition with my articles, but to cover two important and related topics.
I had offered the message last Sunday with transparency about my experience that helped me understand Jonah much more fully – “not just intellectually, but a full immersion in a real threat of losing my life based upon my own stubbornness and, well… stupidity.” I shared that experience more fully with those who have participated on our Zoom calls in the past couple of weeks. Yet, as I wrote last week: “the Jonah experience became more relevant to me than it ever had been before. However, I realized my experience was more a metaphor for the experience America is now going through… the experience caused me to relate driving down a “road to oblivion” to where America is headed in such a time as this. Thus, the first message furthers the thought of last week’s message.
The second message is from me as well, and it is being offered this week because of Patriot Day, the anniversary of the multiple tragedies that occurred on September 11, 2001. So tomorrow is the day of remembrance of the heroes of 9/11, and I have written about the day for quite some time one year after another, in remembrance. The second message is one I wrote and posted in the Canada Free Press last year, entitled: us? “Remembering the Heroes on Patriot Day.” I offer it because I do believe it offers a unique perspective on those who gave their lives for the sake of others.
I happen to believe that both messages are relevant for our time, and it resonates with what the Citizen Sentinel pointed out la couple of weeks ago that “God wants to use us, even us, to intercede for others.” The messages have relevance in real time to our time in our land. And, as always, we hope our readers would consider all the messages (featured and aggregated) in this edition as having relevance or meaning, and if readers know others who might also value the messages, we pray they would consider becoming LightWing messengers and kindly pass our newsletters on to those who would welcome them. Otherwise, please simply receive these messages yourselves.
Our Zoom discussion last Wednesday was lively and more fully focused on the topic and discussion was not swept off topic as it can be depending upon those participating in the call. The Zoom calls continue to be offered each Wednesday at 5pm PDT (6pm MDT; 7pm CDT; and 8pm EDT). This coming Wednesday, we will still meet and have a discussion on either of the articles today. Readers can partake in this upcoming Zoom call on Wednesday and participate (or just listen) in our discussion, by please reaching out. Readers who are interested in receiving the Zoom link to the call, are asked to please send a brief email request to this address: d.jamzon@gmail.com
CSN LightWing Mission – Zoom call Wednesday 9/13/23 at 5:00pm PDT
These words are being freely offered to you – intended to shine light unto our paths, as written:
“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” Proverbs 29:18 - KJV
May God bless all of our readers and all of their loved ones. May God bless America!
May we, who are called by His name, humble ourselves (earnestly place ourselves daily in His presence with genuine humility) and repent of our transgressions against (even the least among us) and receive with true gratitude His Mercy and His loving Grace. In return, may we receive His love and guidance, and pro-actively transform our lives, so as to truly pursue His righteousness and the building of His Kingdom.
Are We All Jonahs in Such A Time As This?
By Dennis Jamison 9/9/23
This message is, in in one sense, the second part to the message I offered in our previous week’s LightWing Messages, entitled: “Realization, Repentance, and A True U-Turn.” As indicated in the introduction to that message, it was based upon my own Jonah experience driving down a “road to oblivion.” The essence of the experience was that I had to have a realization that the road was truly leading nowhere, and I needed to repent for my lack of better sense, or my willingness to fully trust Google Maps. I mentioned in that message last week: “People of faith are taught to have faith and persevere even in difficult times and trust in God. But, part of our course of faith is to also do as Jonah did when he realized the error of his ways and he understood he was responsible for doing what God was calling him to do.”
In digesting the message, I realized that my experience was more of a metaphor for the experience America is now going through. In fact from the days of September 11, 2001, America has seemingly been in an unsteady, roller-coaster ride of decline – possibly a “road to oblivion,” unless there is true widespread awakening or realization of the danger the nation faces in such a time as this. Certainly, on the individual level, people of faith have a tendency to deny actual severity of clear and present danger to themselves or to those around them. Yet, their training in faith, of it is a sound faith, allows them to persevere, possibly in genuine faith, possibly in sheer stubbornness to not surrender to dire circumstances. As I mentioned previously, “if there is little light upon their paths, they miss the obvious signs of impending danger, and proceed as if they will be able to handle it” and all will be okay. Yet, America in the new millennium is distinctly different from America post World War II.
Last week, I concluded by submitting that “Each of us who proclaim faith need to self-examine and do the same soul-searching Jonah had to do, and then do the thing we sense, or know, God is calling us to do right now. This action may depend upon whether there is little light upon one’s path, or whether there is great light. If people are walking through life without much light they will miss the signs of impending danger. This is often why regular people rely upon or put their trust in a spiritual guide or leader like a minister, a rabbi, or a “guru-like individual of wisdom who may seem like they know what they are sharing about faith. That essentially means one is trusting spiritual health and growth to someone else. That is why prophets like Johah or faith leaders in biblical history existed.
However, if a Jonah runs away from what God is requesting of him or her, what then? If Jonah had successfully ran away and hid from God, what would have happened to the inhabitants of Nineveh in that time? On the other hand if Jonah had gone to Nineveh and not one had listened to him, what would have happened to the people? Moreover, what if God has been calling us to a mission to go and reach out to our neighbors in kindness? – or to stand up and speak out for goodness, or justice, or righteousness in a public forum? If it is possible that God is calling to us, how well are we closely paying attention? Are we even listening? Or, if we have heard the call, are we like Jonah trying our best to avoid what He is asking us to do?
It is more than obvious that widespread corruption and criminal disruption of our civil society exists in America right now. In just a short time, the nation has rapidly descended into realms of sexual immorality, depravity, and decadence that would have been unimaginable by decent people at the start of the millennium. So, not only each individual needs to self-examine ourselves, the entire society needs to do a reality check to help decipher what is currently transpiring in the nation at this time. While there are many God-fearing people of faith who are not waiting for the official word on such decadence, many citizens still sit on their hands and wait to be told what to do. And, if trusted leaders are sitting on their hands, or are conflicted as Jonah was, what then? What will happen to the inhabitants of Nineveh America?
In brutal honesty, the wickedness that exists in America today may be much, much worse than the wickedness in Nineveh in Jonah’s day. It is likely even much, much worse than the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in Abraham’s day. We truly live in this modern millennial version of Nineveh! So, are Americans on the proverbial road to oblivion? That depends upon the Americans – NOT upon God. He has always given us choices – we all are endowed with FREE WILL. It is built into our spiritual DNA. God has always offered us the choice to do what He recommends (sometimes understood as commands) or to go the opposite direction. Jesus reminded us of this principle when he bluntly said:
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”
(Matthew 12:30)
So, are Christians really with Jesus, or are they caught up in perpetual virtue signaling? And, if one is truly with Jesus, and we understand what he is asking of his followers, are those who call each other Christians, doing what Jesus asked them to do, or are they like a runaway Jonah? From my humble perspective, many Christians and others of faith are waiting for a Jonah to appear. – Or just waiting for Jesus to return. Or, some Christians seem to be simply waiting to be “beamed up” and plucked out of the collective mess we have permitted to manifest under our noses.
In this mess is considered an existential predicament, many would take it more seriously. If there is no realization or recognition of the evil because of the faint light upon their paths, whether people pretend not to see the evil, or simply underestimate the scope of the danger, or are oblivious, or are swallowed by their comfort zones, the evil still exists. Evil does not go away of its own accord. It is clear that evil did not go away because Jesus was born. Evil has existed and can be understood to have grown in dimension and scope since the time of his advent. May it have something to do with whether people who “followed” Jesus did what he asked of them, or chose an escape route?
If we seriously consider this predicament, each Christian has already received the call of God to act in a righteous way and not run away. If Christians are true to their faith, they must examine what Jesus called them to do. But, even in Jesus’ day, there were those who claimed to be followers, but they were only self-identifying as followers of Christ.
Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone
Who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show
you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down
deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck
that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who
hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built
a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck
that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. (Luke 6:46-49)
Christians who profess faith have already received the call to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness. It baffles me to consider what people are waiting for. I believe Christians have little stomach for taking offense and standing up and speaking out for the truth, for righteousness, or to take responsibility for His Kingdom. Nevertheless, it is very likely God is waiting for us to be the Jonahs. It is very likely God is waiting for us to take responsibility for cleaning up the mess in the United States of Nineveh America.
I re-submit that each person who proclaims they have faith needs to self-examine and do the same soul-searching Jonah had to do, looking with the mirror of their souls to determine what they really believe in and what they truly are willing to do to practice what Jesus asked of followers. Realization of where we are and who we are is an initial step in correcting the mess. So, the first step in this process is to face reality, to realize what is going on around us. The next major step in dealing with widespread evil is to repent – for not doing the right thing to begin with. In genuine repentance, not with a grudging heart, we can realize more deeply the need for a spiritual “U-Turn.”
After we repent, we each need to decide what is to be done in light of the toxic environment around us. For Jonah, the call of God only prompted him to run in the opposite direction. That decision did not turn out well for him initially. We face a culture of corruption that we live in. And, as I mentioned in last week’s message:
we need to unite and work together to bring our nation together and reverse
direction as a society that is currently running in the opposite direction from
God, running counter to His Will, His Righteousness and His KIngdom. We
are all Jonahs in one way or another, if we honestly care about our country,
care about our brothers and sisters, our families, and God’s Will for America
and for the entire world. It is time to weed the garden and to reclaim the Vineyard for God.
People of faith must take up their cross and follow the Lord. They must call the nation to repentance and a turning away from the current environment of wickedness. All who call themselves Christians will have to answer not only to themselves whether they could be proud of practicing what Jesus has asked of them; they will have their moment before Heavenly Father to answer for their actions.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21)
Remembering the Heroes on Patriot Day
By Dennis Jamison 9/11/22
Twenty one years have passed since the horror of the insidious terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center buildings, on the Pentagon, upon innocent lives, and since the days of September 11, 2001, Americans have been affected in direct or indirect ways by the attacks upon the nation and upon the American way of life, and upon the American psyche. It is very obvious that America has not been the same since. In the days following 9/11, America changed dramatically. We speak of post-9/11 as the day became a demarcation line between the “old” America and America we live in today.
So, at the dawning of the new millennium, a devious, destructive, and deadly terrorist organization, known as Al-Qaeda, conducted these sneak attacks upon civilian and military targets as they managed to weaponize commercial airliners against multiple targets, civilian and military alike. Tragically, the combined terrorist attacks on 9/11, resulted in the murders of over 2,977 people and the injury of 6,000 others -- people from over 90 nations died in these attacks. Memories of the attacks on the civilians in the Twin Towers, the military and civilian personnel at the Pentagon, and defenseless passengers on the airliner that went down in an obscure field in Pennsylvania, left permanent scars on the nation and upon the people.
Currently, the multiple attacks are recognized as the most successful surprise assault against America. These multiple attacks were synchronized, with military-like precision, and did not just aggressively and strategically target buildings, in mere moments there we so many thousands of human lives that were destroyed. The specter still haunts many Americans, and the attacks have left an internal scar upon the nation within the minds and hearts of the populace. Americans and people around the world were forced to grapple with their grief over the sudden massive destruction and widespread loss of life - worse than the death and destruction at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
These horrible acts of destruction and murder on U.S. soil were incredibly dark days in U.S. history. The insidious assaults awakened the American public to develop a more substantial and comprehensive response to a perceived enemy. The attacks on 9/11 instigated a definite turning point in U.S. history. Yet, as horrendous and deadly as the infamous attacks upon the United States have been, the people of the nation have been stifled in their ability to completely rebound. In looking back over those 21 years, there have been good developments and bad developments within the nation.
More recently, with COVID and the advent of government lockdowns, as well as internal terrorist attacks, very destructive rioting, and a sharp increase in criminal activities, there are several worrisome events that plague the nation. Are these developments only coincidences or a cycle the nation is going through? Many pundits conjecture that the nation is on the verge of civil war. Could there be a deeper, or more biblically-based reason for such a time as this?
It is a serious question, not based upon conspiracy theories, but based upon what is readily observable to the people who care to consider the proverbial “writing on the wall.” Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, in his 2011 novel The Harninger, expresses that those terrorist attacks on the nation actually represented a “Divine warning” to the people of the United States. He made a comparison between the attack upon ancient Israel in 732 B.C. to the attacks on 9/11. He believes that in both cases, there was a breach in God’s protection of the people due to the breaking of the covenant each nation once had with God.
Rabbi Cahn believes the nation was warned that divine protection had worn thin on 9/11, and the nation needed to restore its covenant with God by returning to God via repentance and turning away from “wicked ways” that have been perpetrated by those who have little or no relationship with God. Such wickedness permeates this once great country at such a time as this. Certainly, a great many Americans are undeterred in their pursuit of unlimited personal pleasure, unrestricted sexual perversion, uncaring pursuit of wealth, or unrestrained political power. However, more and more Christians and people of faith are awakening to the perils perpetuated by those who care little for God or for His children. In such a time as this, prayers and genuine expressions of repentance provide a basis to “get real with God.” Yet, God would be deeply moved by those who “sin no more.”
It is understandable that confusion and unbridled criminal activity creates a chaotic and toxic environment. Clarity of purpose in heart and mind brings forth the ability to decide and act responsibly and in ways that individuals would hold themselves accountable to God and their fellow human beings. This is such a time of chaos and lawlessness. The events on 9/11 demonstrated the power of destructiveness and goodness side by side. The events on 9/11 demonstrated the power of evil and the power of good side by side. The reason we have created Patriot Day to commemorate this day is not to drudge up the memories of death, destruction, pain and suffering, but to remember and honor the brilliance of goodness that shone through so many selfless acts of bravery and heroism.
Now Americans refer to this day as Patriot Day as a way to remember those brave men and women who put aside their confusion and fear to enter into chaos, to proceed into the danger zone, to help serve and save their fellow human beings caught up in harm’s way. Some of those people worked for the local or national government and some of those patriots were simply attempting to secure safety and well-being for their fellow citizens. In that moment there was little division; in that moment existed a people united. In this present darkness that has befallen America, people of faith, even all citizens of the world should remember 9/11 and the days since.
We need to remember that in such times of crisis and dire emergency, it is then that the heroes are born. They arise amidst the danger, in the midst of chaos, division, or strife, the heroes appear and are set apart because they could conquer their fear and did run forward toward the danger to simply see what they could do to help. In that moment in history, there were people in dire need, in serious danger and few stopped their actions to serve because someone was black or Asian or Hispanic or Jewish or Muslim or seen as different in some way. The heroes on that day felt called to act responsibly and not cowardly or indifferently in the sight of God. The heroes on that day held
themselves accountable to Him and their fellow human beings. Is not that what Jesus asked of us?
