CSN Sunday - LightWing Messages for 2/27/2022
God Is Our Refuge and Strength
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in times of trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth is transformed
and the mountains are toppled
into the depths of the seas,
though their waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake in the surge.
There is a river whose streams delight the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her; she will not be moved.
God will help her when morning dawns.
Nations rage, kingdoms crumble;
the earth melts when He lifts His voice.
The LORD of Hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come, see the works of the LORD,
who brings devastation upon the earth.
He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
He burns the shields in the fire.
“Be still and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted over the earth.”
The LORD of Hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46 (Berean Study Bible)
These are the times that try people’s souls. Just as the Canadian people rose up and won at least a public relations victory, the Russian leadership authorized the invasion of Ukraine. As the horrors of another contemporary war commences, there is a glimmering hope that common people around the world, like the truckers and the “Freedom Convoy” in Canada, are awakening and the cry for freedom reverberates from one corner of the world to another. In the midst of the cold and depth of winter, the cries for freedom reverberate from one corner of the world to another - from Venezuela to Afghanistan, to China, to Canada, to Nigeria, to North Korea to Taiwan, to the Ukraine, and even to the United States of America.
As I mentioned in my message last week, we suffer from an information glut and much of the information we receive misses the mark of veracity, and much of the information we receive is deliberately deployed disinformation. So, readers must beware, in the fog of war (and we have been at war for a while now), of deliberate deceit to either confuse or corrupt or destroy one’s righteous mind. Each of us needs to take time to consult our conscience and to seek guidance from God. Sometimes that can only be received when our hearts and minds are quiet - still. To receive His guidance, I have found one has to quiet the soul and be calm from the inside out.
Today, we have two messages for our readers to contemplate. One is from Dr. Richard Moss, a friend, a Jewish doctor in Indiana who shares his wisdom with us today. He contributes words of wisdom to the Citizen Sentinels occasionally, and we are grateful for his light. His article is about the winter period we are in, and it could be titled the “Winter of the Soul.” He originally wrote this in 2019. But, it is very prescient and quite appropriate for such a time as this.
The second message is from Susan Schreier Clouse, a former Methodist minister, and her brief message is very timely. In the winter of our souls, we need to consider the “things” we consider of greatest value. Freedom for many all across the world, for the entire human family is one of those things. It is an idea whose time has come for the entire human community. Let us all take some time in the midst of winter to consider the ideals and values we hold most dear.
Please accept it for what it may be worth to you; but more importantly, please pray for the poor Ukrainian people who are being subjected to such brutality - and pray for all those people of the world who yearn to be free. It is a time in which all of God’s children can rise up to embrace the dimensions of freedom and to plant the seeds of freedom in their own nations, just as common people in the Americas rose to fight for freedom in their time. Let freedom ring! Let freedom resonate from one realm of the planet to another.

Winter, Desolation, and Faith
By Richard Moss, MD
February 20, 2020
The depths of winter are the bleakest of times, grey and fallow, the trees emptied of life, the wildlife desperate and sullen, the earth a crystalline tomb. The winter mires us and spreads its desolation before us. It sinks its fingers into our flesh, immobilizing us as it does the world. The winter is a metaphor for death, but it is also death itself. It captures us like beasts and encircles us.
But within the wretchedness there is a thread. Winter bears a bitter irony - that with its pitiless encroachment new meaning can come. But like nature we must turn inward. In winter we self-examine and prune our excesses. As nature labors inwardly after the leaves have fallen, so must we.
In winter we glimpse the approaching spring: even as we drift pointlessly, lost in our labyrinths, gazing at mirrors, combing the ruins of our lives and the evolving expanse of our illusions. In that emptiness, we may reach for some tenuous slip of life.
We may recover our souls in winter even as we are grounded in its bleak soil, our roots
frayed and broken, the knowledge of death upon us, its odor wafting about us. Our faces are withered, our bones bowed and arthritic, our souls failing; we commune with the elders who know the prophecies. But in the midst of winter and its letter of death, we glean the signs of faltering life. We do not hide from mortality and its numbing portent; we embrace it, and so unshackle ourselves.
The lakes and rivers will thaw, new leaves will form, flowers will turn over in the copper earth, gardens will decorate the land as ornaments, the insects and forest life will multiply, the birds will repopulate the heavens, the cobalt seas will warm and seethe, the rains will return, the farmers will plow the mahogany fields, and a new harvest will come.
Turn inward in winter, as nature does, and repair oneself. Recall the past and discern its wisdom. As the winter consumes us, so too does it scatter the seeds of the next generation: the earth will ply its orbit and hold its tilt, the sun will cast its broad filigree of light, and the eternal cadences will release us and bestow God’s benediction. Through the specter of death we may live again. Within the winter of the mind we glimpse the spring of the mind. New life will come.
The spring will sanctify us with its budding fruit. It will ripen in summer. In fall, we shall have our bounty. And then shall come the winter as the earth dies again and prepares for the coming seasons of grace. We rediscover the Almighty in the cycles He has created; He renews us, and we are reborn.

Something to Think About: Freedom
By Susan Schrier Clouse
2/23/22
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31-32, NIV
Read : John 8:31-47 for the full discussion
The left has now determined that freedom is dangerous. In Orwellian fashion, leftists claim that “freedom” is a code word used by evil people who want to overthrow the government. For example, the Canadian truckers, like the January 6 protestors in the US, are radical extremists that must be punished and controlled because of their cries for “Freedom.” I’m sure they will also apply it as a smear to the Peoples’ Convoy of truckers now crossing America.
While freedom is indeed dangerous to leftist governance, it is the guiding principle of conservative governance. The whole point of the U.S. Constitution and its famous Bill of Rights is to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”
What is this freedom the right holds so dear and the left fears? Where does it come from?
It comes from God. This was self-evident to America’s founders and to billions of men, women, and children across the millennia. Each of us knows we have the freedom to make choices, including the choice to accept or reject God’s guidance in our lives. That choice, more than any other, has eternal consequences. It we choose to accept God on God’s terms, and all that that entails, our freedom expands. When we reject God, and God’s desires for us, our freedom diminishes.
God’s gift of freedom, like yeast that leavens a whole loaf of bread, has grown exponentially in the West where the life, death, resurrection, and teaching of Jesus Christ is accepted and followed. Why? Because Jesus taught God’s truth by what he said and did, and it is God’s truth that sets us free to become the people we were created to be.
As Christianity spread, the gift of freedom God granted to humanity has slowly expanded into all areas of human life. Through the followers of Jesus, freedom has worked its way from our hearts, through our families, into our culture and finally, within the last 700 years or so, into our governments.
This is the freedom we are on the very edge of losing. Why? Because we as a culture, as a nation, and ultimately as individuals are no longer adhering to what Jesus taught us about God, about human nature and about how best to live.
While I believe with all my being Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our Savior, I strive to do more than believe. I FOLLOW Jesus, and as he said to that group of believing Jews, that means ‘holding’ to his teaching. Hold to it, abide in it, remain in it, do it! Let it be the guide for how you live.
It is not a mystery what Jesus taught. Love each other as God loves us. How do we do that? We can read about how in the Bible every day. We can see it lived out in those who follow Him. We can see it in the amazing world God created. We can learn it through opening our hearts to Him in prayer.
Here’s the challenge: If you want to be free, if you want to secure the blessings of liberty for your children and their children, seek God’s truth. Not your truth, not my truth, not the left’s truth, not the right’s truth – but THE truth.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for loving us. Teach us your truth. Help us live it! Help us cherish and preserve your gift of freedom to us, our country and Your world. Amen.
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31-32, NIV
